12 -- PORT PERRY STAR REAL ESTATE -- Tuesday, October 31, 1989 Warm sun greets Islanders as they leave church Scugog Island Area News by Mrs. Earl Reader ESTHER KELLY Esther was an active partici- pant on the Student Council at C.H.S., in sports and was the editor of the Year Book. Esther is now attending Queen's Universi- ty majoring in Physical Education. I'm sure its safe to say everyone enjoyed the Indian Sum- mer of the past week, except the early fogs for driving. In talking to people on opposite sides of the Island, one described the beauty in outline of houses across the lake as the sun cleared away the fog. On the opposite side, one resident described the wild beauty as hundreds of wild ducks rose or settled on a nearby pond. We appreciate our Island living more each year. On Sunday a record attendance was noticed at the Island United Church where a well delivered service was appreciated. In reviewing the take-home bulletins we were made aware of a different side of China from the one in recent news. Chinese life is improving in food production for 1,073 billion people. Housing is im- proving as well as life in the Chinese Church and life-affecting decisions. After the service the congrega- tion gathered outside, in the sun, like flies at this time of year, to have a friendly chat with neighbours. It was certainly reminiscent of former days. Rev. Lynne Belfry-Graham will not be in her office this week due to her continuing education pro- gramme. She is taking 'Conflict Resolution in the Church' at Five Oaks. This Wed. the "Head" U.C.W. will meet at the home of Mrs. Clara Dowson. The "Grace" U.C.W. will not meet until Thurs- day evening in the church base- ment when they will see a video on 'Women in the Ministry." Anyone is welcome. Starting next Sunday & every Sunday in Nov. there will be a food box near the door to restock the Food Bank, as it is now the turn of the Island United Church. It has been the custom of Island residents to express, through this column, sympathy to neighbours and other residents when they lose a dear family member. Therefore, at this time we send condolence to Jim Tower and his family on Conc. 9 as Jim's father in New Brunswick passed away with a heart attack. Jim became well known to us in the election of last year and his wide spread work. We are slow in expressing sym- pathy to Burnsell Webster and his family in Port Perry but former- ly of Manchester as they mourn the loss of Burnsell's wife, Marion. They spent much of their life as ardent workers in the . Scugog Pastoral Charge. This week the "Head" U.C.W. and friends will be serving at the Hospital Tuck Shop. : Mrs. Marion Carter has return- ed to her cozy little home and par- ticipation with the Golden Slip- pers after a month in Edmonton where she travelled by train ac- companied by granddaughter Kristy Richardson to visit with her daughter Ann, husband, & 2 grandchildren, 4 & 2 years. Ann is a very busy person with her nee- dle craft & teaching in this capacity. The Christian Women's Club will meet Thursday, Nov. 2 at 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. for a dessert evening at the Masonic Hall on Queen St. The Special Feature is "Great Pie Making" as well as Special Music & Speaker. Please phone Kim 985-8753 for reservations. New grain plan deadline The deadline for the second year of the Ontario Farm Income Stabilization Plan has been ex- tended to December 31, 1989, from October 1, 1989. The voluntary, three-year plan, which began in 1988, covers corn, soybeans, barley, oats, winter wheat, spring wheat and canola. Participating growers receive a supplementary payment from the stablization fund in years when market prices are depressed. No fee or crop production estimates are required to enroll. To be eligible for the plan, pro- ducers must agree to complete, sign and return a crop sales report each year. The 20 per cent penalty for late enrolment by eligible producers for the second year of the plan has been eliminated for the period up to December 31, 1989. Any forms postmarked after that date will be accepted for the third and final year of the plan at a 20 per cent penalty. Payments will be limited to the two-thirds of the plan funded by the provincial government. Producers, who enrolled in 1988 for the three-year program, will receive acknowledgement of their enrolment later this fall. Enrolment forms will be available at the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, in Ux- bridge, later this month. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 18 SALE TIME: 10:00 A.M.
