PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 7, 1969 -- 27 S.A. Cawker wins Central volle yball title S.A. Cawker's intermediate volleyball team volleyed their ra to the title of Durham Cen- Intermediate Champions for Mino¥ Schools, Thursday. In the championship game, S.A. Cawker's. excellent play, led them to a sweep, at the ex- pense of the Sunderland team. All games were a three out of five series. The scores for the fi- nal game, in favor of S.A. Caw- ker, were 16-6, 16-3, and 15-11, The tournament pla was di- ~ vided into two pools of teams. S.A. Cawker a vanced to first Place in their pool by handily efeating Cartwright Central by scores of 16-7, 15-7, and 15- 13, and HW. Knight by scores of 15-6, 15-4, and 15-12. Upon defeating H. W. Knight, Cawker advanced to play the second place finishing team in the other pool. This pitted Caw- ker against Thorah Central. Thorah appeared to pose the biggest threat, handing Caw- ker their first loss, which ad- vance the series to 4 games. Cawker's powerful play once again brought them out on top with scores of 15-8, 15-4, 13-15, and 15-8, and advanced Caw- ker into the final match with the Sunderland team. This win qualifies the Caw- ker volleyball team to advance to the Minor School Intermedi- ate Championships, at Westney Heights' to meet the top eight in Durham, with hopes to capture the cham- pionship. Pineridge boys top Clippers The Pineridge Atom B's won again in league action against Stouffville 4-2 last Monday (Oct.30) With less than two minutes into the game Stouffville made a quick pass out in front and banged it in. At the end of the first period, Chris Drury made a great check in front of his net and passed to Justin Halligan who skated up the. ice and slid the puck'under 'the goalie to tie it up. Four minutes into the 2nd period Jason Hopkins passe : to Robert Gracie who a y found Justin Halligan in e clear. Justin took a hard shot from the hash marks to put in 1 ber 2. Stouffville then a p. Action continued Friday Hight" 2 in Manvers where the Pineridge 'team came up against a strong, good skating team from Manvers. This was not to be their night, as Manvers skated to a 6-0 win. Over the past week-end, the team played in the Oakwood tour- nament. The first game was up against Stroud, and the boys were still feeling the effects from the bad night in Manvers as Stroud skated to a 6-1 win. Matt Phillips set up by Kevin Hobbs and Shane Norton scored the lone goal for Port. 'The next game was against the Oshawa Bruins. Although Port ended up losing 5-1, the game was a lot closer than the score indicated __ The boys worked hard and i im- proved immensely from tHe first game but suffered from:some unlucky bounces and deflections. Matt. Phillips scoréd "on a. nice - end-to-end rush in the third period. The third and final game was early Sunday morning against St. John The Baptist team from Peterborough. Again Lady Luck was not with Port this day as St. John opened the scoring in the first period with a lucky bounce. Port played hard but could not - break down the St. John Defence. ; "St." John capped a 2-0 win with a goal late in the third period to "deflate the Port team. Petites romp over Mariposa The Bruton's 1.D.A. petite tear' hosted the squad from Mariposa | on Saturday October 28. This game saw the Bruton's team start a little on the slow side as they found themselves down by a goal within 30 seeonds of the opening whistle. This early goal seemed to wake the girls up and on the next shift they tied the score. From this Dont on, the girls played well and skated hard to earn an 11 to 1 victory. Shona played well in net to keep the opposition from-adding more than 1 goal to their side of the game sheet. The markers for this game were Cara with 3 big assists, 1 goal, Mandy 2 assists, 1 goal, Dana 1 assist, 1 goal, Cindy 2 assists, with single assists going to Katie, Melissa Pereman and Michele. Other markers were Lynda with 8 goals, Brandy and Joan with 2 goals each and Natasha with 1 goal. On Saturday November 4, with the scheduled league game '"eancelled, the Bruton Ar had an exhibition game with Oshawa. This game although played much to the dismay and ire of a few parents, finally gave the girls some competition. It was a see-saw battle from start to finish as the final score.of 7-7 shows how equal these -teams were. Katie in net and our three red sticks of Shona, Jenny and Melissa P. played well to main- tain the tie. Scoring for this game were Cara 3 assists, Shona 2 assists, Dana 1 goal, 1 assist, Brandy and Lynda with 2 goals each, Joan and Natasha with 1 goal each and single assists going to Michele and Mandy. The following Sunday morning the girls hit the ice to sharpen .their skating skills for their next game in Bobcaygeon on Wednes- day Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. This practice saw the return of our injured player, Sheila Ranger to action.
