Recycling week November 20-26 The theme for this year's Recycling Week, coming up November 20-26th, is 'Changing Attitudes: Reduce-Reuse- Recycle." Plans are well under- way for activities that will draw people's attention to the desperate need to reduce the amount of gar- bage we create. Several local businesses have been contacted and asked to en- courage customers to "BYOB"' - bring your own bag-when shopp- ing. Grocery store managers are being asked to become part of the solution to the garbage problem by reducing unnecessary packag- ing of fruits and vegetables, for example, since styrofoam trays are often not really needed and definitely do create a lot of extra garbage. Many youth groups such as Cubs, Scouts, Brownies, etc. have been notified of Recycling Week and asked to draw attention to it. Essay contest The Optimist Club of Uxbridge will hold an essay contest on the subject of Freedom, Our Most Precious Heritage beginning in October. The contest is open to all high school students in grades 10 through 13 in the Uxbridge and Port Perry areas. Local winners will receive medals and cer- tificates, and the first place win- ner will move on to the Central Ontario District contest. The author of the winning entry in the district contest will be awarded an expense paid four day trip to the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania for a special seminar on the subject of Freedom and Leadership. - The winner of the Optimist In- ternational contest will be selected from all district winners and will, with his parents, enjoy a trip to the Optimist Interna- tional Convention City in addition to a scholarship worth more than $5,000.00 at an institute of higher learning of his or her choice. The second and third place winners in the International contest will gain scholarships worth $3,000.00 and $2,000.00 respectively. Entries must be original, com- pletely by contestants without assistance and be submitted by December 1. Students at Uxbridge Secon- All schools will be receiving a "teachers' package' with sugges- tions for activities related to recycling. Businesses interested in finding out how to create less garbage in the workplace are being inform- ed that they are welcome to invite a staff member from Durham Region to come and conduct a "waste audit." The contact per- son for this is Sherry Eaton at 668-7721. During Recycling Week there will be displays at various loca- tions to show people the kinds of things that can be recycled, as well as how to reuse many other items creatively. Local Women's Institute members, who have focused on recycling issues for the past two years, will be in charge of many of these displays. On Tuesday, November 21 there will be a film called "The Sound of the Stream' shown at the Scugog Memorial Library for people who are interested in lear- ning more about the pros and cons of current and proposed methods of waste management (i.e. what to do with and where to put gar- bage). Since this whole issue is so critical right now, it is hoped that there will be a good turnout of people to see the film and generate discussion. Finally, keep in mind that the Santa Claus parade is going to be taking place during Recycling Week. If your, group can manage to incorporate something on the 'recycling theme into your float plans, that would be a worthwhile contribution to the week's events. Check next week's paper for display locations and more details on the information night at the library. Contact Janet Banting at 985-3225 if you have information or suggestions about Recycling Week.
