EE iit SE squad HH EE a] 30 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 14, 1989 Gold for Bantams On Saturday Nov. 11 the Goreski Insulation Bantam No. 1's, sponsored by Goreski Insula- tion hosted their own tournament and came away with the Cham- pionship Trophy by defeating their rivals from Uxbridge. Was this a barn burner folks, as Port took the game by a score of 2-1. The tournament was attended by 4 teams including Uxbridge, Whit- by, Peterborough and the champs, Port Perry. A great tour- nament, all around. Port vs. Uxbridge This game was for early birds, and you know what they say, the early bird catches the worm, and in this game Uxbridge got it by beating Port 3-2. Coach Wilbur's pep talk before ~ the game was to stay out of the penalty box, because the game was short and we could not afford to take stupid penalties. Both teams did pretty well as they both only took 6 minutes. There wasn't any scoring in the first frame, but at the 7:16 mark of the 2nd J. Cochrane fed Laird to make it a two on one. Laird skated down the left hand side and ripped a slapshot to the stick side. J. Cochrane assisted. Then it was Uxbridge's turn as they scored 3 goals in 2 minutes. All unanswered. Port's defence had slacked off. Port never had a break in this game. For instance: the team had hit 4 goal posts and deserved to win. Port's offence did not give up though, as they had 1 more crack at it. It was "McFish" who got a breakaway, as Traynor and Vanderlight sent him away. "McFish" made no mi<take as he _ buldged the twine for the final tal- ly. Uxbridge had put this one in the books as they beat Port 3-2. Coach Wilbur wanted to see these boys in the final, as we hate to lose to Uxbridge. Hutchinson got the call in net and played well despite the loss. Port vs. Peterborough Port had time to go home bet- ween games and get a couple of hours sleep, so we could "defeat" the Petes. Port could not afford another loss because it was double-knock out, 2 losses and you're history. Coach Wilbur had never won this tournament and he wanted it more than anything in the world. His players wanted it too, and went out with fire in their eyes. If they beat the Petes, they were going to the Championship. The final outcome was tremen- dous as Port cleaned the Petes' clocks 4-0, was coach Wilbur go- ing bananas. Shawn (Bunny) Larocque handled the net duties and looked confident and showed the poise of a great goaltender. Nice shutout. Port got on the scoreboard first and never looked back, was this a beauty. The Insulator's J. Cochrane got the team burning and wanting it more as he ripped one home, top corner. Assisting were Logan and Parry. A powerplay goal, and a beauty. Peterborough wasn't giving up, but in the 2nd frame Port scored another powerplay beauty. They set up in the offensive end and made it look, oh so easy. Logan worked hard in the cor- ner to get the puck back to Laird, who feathered a pass to G. Cochrane who was loading his rocket launcher and he ripped an amazing slapshot upstairs. Nice rip Gavin! The Petes were losing it as 2 players were ejected for un- necessary behaviour. Port then scored again as D. Pashley broke out and snapped a shot that had eyes for the top-shelf. Empr- ingham assisted on this phenomenal goal at the 7:31 mark. Port had to do it once more as they say in show biz, as J. Cochrane fed to Laird who was all alone in front and called for the pass. Bingo, Port was now winn- ing 4-0. After Laird scored he was nail- ed with a patented cross-check to the back of the head by the Petes' captain. The team could imagine, he wouldn't be captain much longer after that fiasco. Port had a major size advantage as they were at least 1 foot, taller in this match, as they made it into the Championship by beating the Petes Novices 4-0. Championship Game Port had an hour rest and were pumped up, and had a winning at- titude for this confrontation against Uxbridge. Port was confident in this one and you could see flames rising off their sticks. They were ready toroll, and were they ever as Port won a heartstopper 2-1, at the Memorial Arena to take home the gold. I'll tell ya folks Russ Court- nall couldn't have caught the squad from Port tonight, they were hot to trot. . There wasn't any scoring in the first period as both tedms played X-L gives all with Oshawa On Sunday, November 12, 1989, the Port Perry XL Eagles Novice Ringette team met up with an ex- tremely powerful Oshawa I team. The score was 13-2 in favour of Oshawa, however, no one - not the players, the fans or the coaches gave up. They put a 100 percent ~ effort throughout the game. The ring just seemed to constantly slip away from them. But once again it was good clean ringette. Both teams are to be congratulated on a no penalty game. Oshawa I play game. This team has many ex- cellent skaters and ring handlers. Our two goals were scored by Janine Hammond and Alechia Cracknell, way to work girls. They were assisted by good passes from Bonni Jo Norton and Amanda Wakeford. The tireless efforts of Jennifer an extremely aggressive: Eliot and Laura Hooker just never seemed to be enough and these girls were robbed of scoring opportunities' on more than one occasion. The defence of the Eagles re- mained strong as Bonni Jo Nor- ton, Pam Hiltz, Janna Senyk and Brooke Shanley definitely had their work cut out for them. You worked hard girls and never gave up! Although Oshawa had a strong defence the efforts of Jenny Lane, Jennifer. Donnelly, Melissa Hooker and Diane Vanderligt did not go unnoticed. Keep up the great work girls, your getting bet- * ter by the game. ' Last but not by far least, w have to acknowledge the tremen- dous efforts put forth by our oalie, Jennifer Hammond. She ad a lot of remarkable saves, great defence in front of their stopper. Hutchinson got the call and played great, well making some scintillating saves. Rick also stymied the offence of Ux- bridge in this one, excellent game Hutchy! In the 2nd period it was Wayne who came out from behind the net and shot, and got his own rebound to score. Empringham was the scorer, and his set-up men were Moase and Pashley. Nice effort Dewie! - Uxbridge then went on the powerplay but didn't capitalize before Laird did. Laird an- ticipated a pass across the blue line and took it, breakaway! He had to outskate Bonner and did so. He leaned to the inside and tuck- ed it between the goalies legs. A short-handed, unassisted effort. Good hustle! This proved to be the winning goal as Uxbridge scored once in the 3rd to ruin the shutout for Hutchy. breakaway. When the Port Perry Bantams meet their rivals from Uxbridge, you can usually count ship game MVP as he helped his team to a 2-1 win over rival Uxbridge to take the gold at the tournament held in Port Perry over the weekend.
