The MoJacks went into the game three points behind league leading Bowmanville in the standings, and it was obvi- ous that both teams badly want- ed to come out of it with a victo- ry. This game featured a lot of wide open hockey, some fine goaltending at both ends of the ice, and more than enough heavy hitting in the corners and along the boards. Penalties played a crucial role in the outcome of the game as the Eagles scored all four of their goals on the power play, and the MoJacks scored three of their four while holding a man advantage. If, as many observers pre- dict, these two teams hook up in the league championship series next spring, there were some valuable lessons to be learned on Saturday evening in front of a big crowd at the Scugog Are- na. It didn't take the MoJacks long to get their power play cranked up as Danny Maw, in just his second outing with the team, clicked at 2:41 with as- sists from John Harman and Brad Menzies. But that lead was short- lived as the Eagles went to work with their devestating power play with three goals in the span of five minutes. Nick Dennis, the league's leading scorer hit for two of them with the other by Dan Fai- rey. At this point in the game the MoJacks were sagging, es- pecially when captain Brad Menzies got the hook for disput- ing a penalty call by ref Frank "Robinson. Coach Ken Harman likely had a word or two to say to his players between periods, and with just 25'seconds gone in the middle frame, Steve Connors was set up in the circle by Har- .man and John Lally and he found the old "five hole" be- tween the pads of Eagle net- minder Scott Webster. Then it was the Eagles turn to run into a string of minor pen- alties, and the MoJacks had half a dozen excellent chances to get the equalizer. Finally, at 8:32, it was Maw with his second of the game on the power play with help from. ~~" Harman and Giacalone. DON'T LET } The MoJacks outshot the visitors 18-6 in the second peri- od. At 1:36 of the third, the Ea- gles once again used their pow- er play to take a 4-3 lead as they moved the puck around the Mo- Jack zone until George Pithie was set up all by himself at the side of the net to tap the puck home. Rookie Jim Vernon gave the MoJacks the 4-4 deadlock at 3:33 on passes from Kevin Gib- son and Connors. Vernon was crusing down the left side and fired a hard slap shot from a rather sharp angle. The puck caught the short side between the post and Webster's blocker. And that's the way this al No ModJack Steve Connors didn he did get an important goal fro as the MoJacks and Eagles ba ing Junior C tilt so far this season at the Scu tong for 60 minutes. Eagles are still on top ttled toa 4-4 d PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday. November 28, 1989 -- MolJacks-Eagles battle to standoff The two best teams in: the 't beat Bowmanville goalie Scott Webster on this play, but m about the same spot Saturday night at the Scugog Arena eadlock. In what was perhaps the most excit- gog Arena, both-teams went at it hammer and of the standings, with the MoJacks all alone in second. The two teams will do It all again this coming Saturday, only this time in Bowman- ville. (see story for detalls) game ended, and perhaps learn- ing a lesson, both teams stayed out of the "sin bin" in the final period. : ModJacks out-shot the Ea- les 35-28. Netminder Tony rtino faced numerous "quali- ty" scoring chances from the Ea- gles and the Markham native turned in a strong game for Port Perry. i It was his second start in as many nights for the MoJacks as they were in Lakefield Friday and pinned a 9-2 pasting on the last-place Chiefs. Veteran Len Giacalone led the troops with a hat trick and one assist. Kevin Gibson had two with an assist, with singles to John Lally, Todd Taylor, Dar- ren Lee and Jim Vernon, who algo helped the cause with three assists, Vernon, in his rookie sea- son with the MoJacks, is play- ing oxcellent hockey for the team. He's getting his share of goals and assists, .and never stops working. SLAPSHOTS: The MoJacks were without Warren Geer for Saturday;s tiff with the Eagles as he was hit with a two-game suspension for a scrap in the Lakefield game. Hard working Darren Lee missed almost all of Saturday's game with a knee injury. Chris Edmonson is still out with knee problems as well. It is very obvious so far this season that the guys in the striped shirts are calling the games close, and any player who doesn't like the calls winds up in the box with the USC or gets an early. exit for the show- ers. The ModJacks have signed Danny Maw (he played in both weekend games, getting two goals and one assist) He started the season with the Lindsay Junior B team. He lives in the Janetville area, played minor hockey here and in Manvers, and he's a solid two way player. The ModJacks came out of _ the weekend with 26 points on 12 wins, two ties and three de- feats. But they are five points behind Bowmanville who dou- bled Uxbridge 4-2 Friday eve- ning, then pasted Ajax 9-2 on Sunday while the MoJacks wereidle. MoJacks played Monday night in Cobourg and this week- end, they travel to Bowmanville on Saturday night, then host the Cobourg Cougars at the Scugog Arena on Sunday. The team has been getting some excellent work from sever- al players whose names don't appear too often on the score sheet. Kevin Desrosiers, Steve Durham, Jim Gibbens, Paul Wilkins and Bob Willets have all made positive contributions to the success the MoJacks have enjoyed to date. 25
