Katie placed second in the province in the Annual Auto- motive Awareness Essay Con- test, which was co-sponsored by Tele-Direct Yellow Pages, and the automotive industry. The essay topic was to be "The one feature every car needs", and Katie decided that feature was an educated driver. The English Department at Port Perry High School, where Katie is a Grade 9 student, en- couraged the students to enter this contest to receive as many essays as possible. The result was 600 essays from Port Perry High School students. Each teacher chose the essay he/she felt was the best in that class, and in turn all the teach- ers voted on one essay to send to the contest. The essay was to be between 200-250 words, and was open to 2 Shudants in Grade 9 through The second place finish for Katie is even more of an achievement, as her essay was only one of a total of 14,356 that were judged. "I didn't think I would do that well, it still hasn't hit me. The feeling is great, but it does not seemreal yet," she said. Katie's teacher Aneas Lane also won $100 for being Katie's English teacher. "I just happened to be in the right place at the right time," he said. The one feature every car needs by Katie Talbot The one feature every car needs is not a fancy computer or automatic system of some kind. It's something some automobiles already have, but unfortunately, there are not enough of them. The feature that I am speaking of is an educated driver, for all the fancy options in the world cannot replace the quick thinking and reflexes of a human being. An educated driver should not only know the basic rules of the road but in addition must know how to drive defensively. It seems as if these days people take driv- ing for granted. So very few people understand that in the wrong hands an automobile can turn into a lethal weapon. They overlook the fact that the most ingenious mode of transport has its drawbacks. In fact, statistics show that every three seconds an automobile accident occurs in North America alone. Recent studies also demonstrate that the car has killed more North Americans in the last fifty years, than all the wars combined that Canada has been involved in.
