The Port Perry Post Office was a busy spot last week as residents crowded In to return PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 28, 1989 -- 3 their old lock box keys and pick up their community mallbox keys. A Star photographer took this picture Friday. Post office employee, Penny Toye, sald the line-ups had been much worse at times during the week. New mail system receiving mixed reaction from locals The local post office lost some of its charm when the Canada Post Corporation introduced the new community mailboxes this week. The system, which is de- sted to provide better postal delivery in Port Perry, met with varying opinions from local resi- dents. Pat Brooks confessed that she enjoys coming down to the post office to get her mail, but she doesn't oppoie the community mailboxes. ."Ijust saw one," she said, add- ing, "I like the fact that it's up off the ground. That's favora- ble." She said the community mail- 'boxes will take away from the socializing that took place at - the post office. - A "It's been like this forever," she said. "Older people won't be able to get out and socialize as much." Jack McMaster said he is against the new system, but said it could be beneficial to some people. "It's lousy, if you ask me," Mr. McMaster said Thursday. The community mailboxes "are a big waste of money." Mr. McMaster lives within one-quarter mile of the post of- . fice and will continue to pick up : his mail there, but he said a . community mailbox 'is located half ablock from his home. "It's costing too much mon- ey," he said. "How much extra help will they need to deliver the mail to all those boxes?" But Mr. McMaster said the boxes would be "ideal" for resi- dents at the nursing home who may not be able to get to the. post office to pick up their mail. Becky Webster was also op- posed to the change in delivery service. "Alot of people say (communi- ty mailboxes) are a pain," she said. "The locks freeze up just like your car door locks. It's.the same thing." "Some are located out of the way for people;"shesaidy: coe. - Heather Boyd voiced thegy opinion of many people when: she said "I'm kind of confused." She said she believes the sys- tem will work out okay once it is implemented, but said it will be an inconvenience to change her address. EE
