But the job of the new consta- bles won't be patroling the streets in search of criminals. In most cases, the criminals will already be under the watch- ful eyes of the rookie police offi- cers. Due to new provincial laws, Bill 187, the regional police force was require Cp hire the additional officers for security meacures at Durham's 15 courts. Both the police force and Dur- ham Region councillors opposed the Bill use it transfers the responsibility of court security from the provincial to the mu- nicipal government level. But on Wednesday, regional councillors voted in favor of hir- ing the constables at a total cost of $660,000. The primary job of the consta- bles will be to ensure the securi- ty of the judges, persons taking part in or attending court pro- ceedings, and persons in custo- y. Bob Attersley, chairman of the Board of Commissioners of Police told regional council hir- ing the nine officers meets the minimum requirement of the Bill. Ajax Mayor Jim Witty said there is a strong indication that nine officers won't be enough. The item was originally lifted from the regional council agen- da for questioning on Wednes- day by Brock Township council- lor John Doble. Mr. Doble had misinterpret- ed the report and believed the officers would be stationed throughout the region. In a speech to council, he asked that two of the constables be stationed in Cannington and Beaverton. "Police response time is inad- equate in Brock Township," Mr. Doble said when asking for ad- ditional manpower. Uxbridge Mayor Gerri Lynn O'Connor rose on a point of or- der, stating that three new con- stables had been recently hired to serve Brock, Uxbridge and Scugog Townships. Regional Chairman Gary Herrema concurred with Mayor O'Connor's statement. "If you didn't live there, we wouldn't need them," Mayor O'Connor joked with the chair- man. Chairman Herrema liveson a farm in northern Uxbridge Township. 1200 Phillip A MN ly « 4 Decorate Your Door In Time for Christmas See our selection of: *Victorian Storm Doors *Interior French Doors *Decorative Entry Doors Murray Ave. Oshawa 236-1344 dHDASHWOQOD' v ---- EE TE TE TE IE I a I LL I DR I -- I EE I I I IE EERE.
