0 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 12, 1989 Letters oi Students angered by criticism To the Editor: I am writing in response to a letter printed in the previous issue of the Port Perry Star (Dec.5/89) concerning the ill manners of to- day's youth. Mrs. Rudkin was -complaining about her day at the Santa Claus Parade. At the end of her letter she attached a "P.S." which not only hurt, but angered me a great deal. I have been Vice and am now President of the P.P.H.S. Student's Council. I have therefore been involved in many student activities, the Santa Claus Parade included, and realize the work that goes into preparing a float for this event. Perhaps Mrs. Rudkin does not. Port Perry High School had three floats in the parade this year. OSAID (Ontario Student's Against Impaired Driving), an organization in the school made up of students concerned for the public's well being, entered their float which displayed a smashed car and a Christmas tree - truly a strong message. The music department entered the parade for the first time this year. The intermediate band was seated on a trailer playing Christmas carols. Surely, Mrs. Rudkin, this takes a certain amount of talent. The final float was entered by my student's council. The winter carnival committee in charge of the float, used the theme "The Jungle." This same float won an award! All together approx. one hun- dred and fifty P.P.H.S. students participated in the parade. This show of Christmas spirit was not quite reflected in the comment made by Mrs. Rudkin. Maybe it was carelessly written. Perhaps Editorial Comment (from page 6) only happen in southern California? Can we continue to ig- nore the warnings signs everywhere that society is increas- ingly violent at all levels, and violence is learned behavior? Most important perhaps, can we treat this horror as strictly an isolated incident, or should we be wondering how many more "Marcs" are out there, armed with high powered weapons and their twisted thoughts, walking the streets -of our towns and cities, time bombs just waiting to ~ go off. Mrs. Rudkin would like to come up to the school and meet me. She could make some positive sugges- tions for next years float, instead of nasty insults. In closing, I'd like to say that I know that many staff and students at the high school were upset by the comment made. I hope that next time Mrs. Rudkin gets angry she will not, so rude- ly, misplace her frustrations. Sincerely, Sharon Jones, President of SAC Port Perry High School Looking forward to speedy solution (From page 8) on Saturday, 2nd December, I was informed that my old post box had been closed and that mail was not being delivered to the new one I had reserved because it had not yet been paid for (apparent- ly, the fact that the rent on the old box had not yet expired meant nothing)! I asked where my mail - was and was told that it was in a bin along with the mail of Thanks to wonderful staff at R.H. Cornish To the Editor: : I would just like to compliment R.H. Cornish on the wonderful people they have working there. I have a son, Jamie, 5 years old, who was unsure about walking home alone for the first time. He was confident about it when taken to school in the morning but changed his mind outside of the classroom. Mr. Todd was out for an after- noon stroll and saw him looking rather confused about what to do and offered to walk with him. This PHONE 985-7383 The 2ovf Peery 235 QUEEN STREET - PORT PERRY, ONT. Qur children look forward to his gym classes. We moved here from Toronto a year ago and feel we have made the right choice for our children.
