Tunney accepts second term as chairman of separate school board At the Inaugural Board ineeting held December 4, Catharine Tun- ney was acclaimed Chairman of the Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board, a second term for the Whitby trustee. Joseph Corey, an Oshawa trustee, was acclaimed as the Board's Vice Chairman. An 18 year veteran of the Board, Mr. Corey served as Chairman in 1979 and 1980. On December 3, the French Language Section acclaimed Fleurette Leger Chairman, and Roger Brideau Vice Chairman of the French Language-Section. Both are Oshawa/Whitby Trustees. At the meeting of the English Language Section, December 5, Mary Zecchino, a Pickering trustee, was acclaimed Chairman, and Ajax trustee, Susan Dulny, was acclaimed Vice-Chairman of the English Language Section. Chairman Tunney accepted her acclamation with words of ap- preciation for her fellow trustees, whom she congratulated for their teamwork and diligence. Looking ahead to a challenging year, Chairman Tunney promis- ed to continue working in- dustriously on behalf of the Board and its ratepayers. Fair funding, she stated, will remain a top priority in 1990, and the Board will continue to urge the province to establish equitable funding legislation for separate schools. Accommodation and Special Education are among additional key issues the Board will address during the year ahead. Father Tom Melady, recently appointed Chaplain to the Board, was welcomed warmly by the Chairman. Strengthened ties bet- ween school, home, and church, said Mrs. Tunney, will enhance Catholic Education in our communities. In his opening comments to the Board, E.J. Lagroix, Director of Education, reflected upon the events of the year past and look- SPECIALIZING IN LADIES' AFFORDABLE FASHIONS .- EXTENDED HOURS: Mon. to Fri. 9:30 AM to 8:00 PM; Sat. 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM. : PORT PERRY PLAZA 285-0129 Fd Decorate Your Door' 4 In Time vr for Christmas VE 2K 2K LE DE RE LE LE 2K 2K 2K 2K EE See our selection of: *Victorian Storm Doors *Interior French Doors *Decorative Entry Doors BR LE 2 KE 2 EE PE 2K 2 2K KK 1200 Phillip Murray Ave., Oshawa RDASHWOOD' Ops RE Cre Hey I ed ahead to the beginning of an exciting new decade. Ac- complishments, celebrations, and challenges were recalled - and more of the same promised for 1990. What lies ahead? More challenges! Regarding the fun- ding of Separate Schools, "Although the funding of Separate Schools looks brighter with Separate Schools sharing in corporate and industrial assess- ment and the passing of Bill 20 on lot levies," Dr. Lagroix maintain- ed, "as the Ministry giveth, the Ministry also taketh away - as it cuts back on grants' The Ministry of Education has also mandated programs such as WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Material Information System), Child Care, Pay Equity, and lower Pupil-Teacher ratios. All good programs, the Director em- phasized, but, since the Ministry does not provide additional funds, the Board is left to carry the burden of financing these programs. In negotiations presently under- way with a number of Bargaining Units, the Board is aiming for fair and equitable settlements. Ac- commodating the region's fast- growing student population will continue to demand persistence and innovation. In closing, Dr. Lagroix stress- ed the need for a 'cohesive board with a Christian sense of Com- munity as we enter the '90's."' As the Board works together to pro- vide the best possible education for students within our system, Dr. Lagroix stated, 'There is no question in my mind that we have first class staff, first class ratepayers, and first rate students. We will, if we continue to work together, serve them well."
