TT, Ry 18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 12, 1989 A well known Sehgeg Township New Democrat be- lieves the NDP "took a chance" when it elected Audrey McLaughlin as federal leader. But Marg Wilburis delight- ed with the choice. In. fact, Mrs. Wilbur, who attended the leadership con- vention in Winnipeg told the Star that not only did she vote for McLaughlin, she "worked the convention floor" on her be- half attempting to convince oth- ~ erdelegates to do the same. She said she was a McLaughlin supporter even be- fore the convention got under- way, and was pleased as punch when the Yukon MP defeated former BC Premier Dave Bar- rett on the fourth ballot. . And despite some media re- ports to the contrary, Mrs. Wil- bur believes the election of Au- drey McLaughlin will make the party stronger, though she con- cedes that initially the new leader has some "fences to mend," especially within the federai caucus in Ottawa. Much has been said and written about the nastiness and bitterness of the Winnipeg con- vention, but Mrs. ilbur doesn't agree. As conventions go, it was - about the middle of the road in terms of nastiness, she told the Star. , "I thought it was a fun con- vention, and the fact that I sup- ported the winner made it more 80," she said. Mrs. Wilbur has long been an NDP stalwart in Scugog Township. She has been a can- didate in a couple of campaigns and has worked as an organizer and manager on numerous oth- ers. When asked specifically what it is about Audrey McLaughlin that attracted her support, she said admires "her guts and her capacity to grow with the (new)job." . And she said she likes McLaughlin's style, which she described as "quieter" and de- signed to encourage dialogue within the party and with Cana- diansin all parts of the country. But she agrees readily the Party has taken a chance in electing a leader with limited experience in the House of Com- mons. "She (McLaughlin) may be unknown now, but I think she has the capacity to grow and improve," said Mrs. Wilbur. Mrs. Wilbur said the elec- tion of McLaughlin has re- kindled her interest in Party politics, an interest she con- cedes had waned a bitin the last year or two. And with former leader Ed Broadbent stepping out of the political arena altogether at the end of the year, Mrs. Wilbur said she will be working for the Party when a by-election is called (likely in the spring of 1990) to fill the Oshawa seat va- cated by Mr. Broadbent. Despite the fact there were several candidates seeking the leadership, Mrs. Wilbur said that in reality it was a two- person race from the outset. "I don't think there was any question that the race was be- Drees Barrett and McLaugh- in." One factor that may have hurt Barrett's chances, she said, was his lack of fluency in - French. Though McLaughlin is not exactly fluent, her French is : better than Barrett's, and she has been taking immersion courses in the language for the past yearorso. And Mrs. Wilbur said that as far as she is concerned, Bar- rett represented a throw-back to the old style of politician, a style that is perhaps no longer appropriate as Canada heads into the 90's. ; Roy Grierson of Port Perry, whoran as the federal NDP can- didate in this area in the 1984 election, also attended the lead- ership convention as a voting delegate, and threw his support behind McLaughlin. As for the now famous gaffe by Saskatchewan MP Si- mon De Jong in which a CBC mike caught him making a deal with Barrett in return for the post as Party Whip in the Com- mons, Mrs. Wilbur just smiled and shrugged and said it was unfortunate and stupid, but that's politica. : "For me, it (the leadership convention) was just nice to be on the winning side for a change," she said with a smile.
