Eight boys and girls in the Scugog-Uxbridge area are in need of a Big Brother or Big Sis- ter. "We have eight children on the waiting list and no Bigs to match them with," said Sue Scholfield of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of North Durham. She suggested that while peo- ple are thinking about Christ- mas, Christmas gifts and New Years' resolutions, perhaps they could think about becom- ing abuddy to alocal youngster. "What we're looking for is ba- sically someone who likes kids," Mrs. Scholfield said. Traditionally, "Bigs" spend three to four hours a week with their "Little", participating in recreational activities or "just hanging around together," she said. "They usually do things that don't take money," she added. Often, the "Little" just needs someone they can count on and who will listen when they have a problem. The youngsters range in age from six to 16 years old. Most come from single-parent homes, but occasionally a child will come from a home where the parents are not able to give enough individual attention to the child. (A parent may be suf- fering from an extended illness or be disabled, or the child may come from a large family where the younger children occupy most of the parents' time.) Big Brothers/Big Sisters of North Durham asks that the "Bigs" give a minimum one year commitment to the organiza- tion.
