By Kelly Storry Figure Skating in Port Perry began in 1959, and is still going strong thirty years later. The Port Perry Figure Skat- ing Club is a non-profit organi- zation, which is run by parent volunteers who are elected each Year to the 15 member execu- ve. The membership for the 1989-1990 season is 100 skat- ors, 60% junior, and 40% sen- or. The Club offers a learn to skate program(Canskate) for beginning skaters, plus a Can- figureskate for skaters that are working on Canadian Mgnt Skating Association(C.F.S.A.) tests and competitions, accord- ing to the President of Port Perry Figure Skating Club, Muriel Berry. The Canskate program of- fers badges such as beginner, elementary, basic, novice 1,2,3,4, and proficiency. Upon the completion of these badges, the skater continues into the C.F.S.A., where they enter competitions and are test- ed for figure, dance, and free skate badges. There is no age distinction, as a skater earns badges by ability, not age. The skaters are coached by professional coaches as well as senior skaters who donate their time to teach what they have learned to the younger ones. Junior skaters receive two hours of ice time per week. in which they receive one 16 min- ute group lesson with a profes- sional coach and are grouped with a Junior coach at afl times, Senior skaters receive one hour of patch time(figures), and two hours of freestyle per week. They also are offered the oppor- tunity of private lessons with a professional coach in freestyle, dance, and patch. MORE SPORTS + on page 11 Real Estate Section Due to the fact that the Fig- ure Skating Club, is a non- profit organization, their source of income comes from registration fees which cover the operating costs. The registration fees are de- termined by the projected num- ber of skaters for each year. Any additional funds that are required are raised through fund raising events. Currently the club is in a no- growth situation due to exist- ingice-time already being used to capacity, and the time that is available to the club is ineffi- cient to cover the needs of the club, according to Mrs. Berry. Other problems associated with lack of ice time are : coach- es are forced to combine freesk- ating and ice dancing in the same time period. This causes many problems such as music selection, as each skater has an individual piece of music for their routine. Also, because competitions are scheduled b tests passed and by age level, Port Perry skaters are at a dis- tinct disadvantage over other skaters who have had up to twice as much ice time or more toprepare.
