The Port Perry Star con- gratulates the 12 Junior Citi- zens of the Year, as selected by a panel of judges with the Ontario Community Newspaper Associ- ation (OCNA) : Included in the 12 winners is 18-year old Debra Surman of Nestleton, Ont. The 12 were selected from 119 nominations from the more than 260 newspapers which are members in the OCNA. OCNA, with co-sponsor Ca- nadian Airlines Internation, has been sponsoring this Junior Citizen program since 1981, to recognize outstanding young people (ages 6 to 19) for their. courage, ingenuity, initiative, leadership, fortitude and com- munity service. The 12 Junior Citizens, and their families, will be guests of OCNA for the awards ceremony on March 9 at the Hilton Inter- national in Toronto. The awards will be present- ed by Ontario Lt. Governor Lin- coln Alexander, and each will receive $200, a plaque, gold la- pel pin, and a family portrait with the Lt. Governor. The following is a brief out- line of why these 12 were select- ed as Ontario Junior Citizens of the Year. *Debra Surman, 18 of Nestleton for her quick thinking in saving the life of her young nephew in a near fatal car accident. Realizing that the car would crash, she un- did her seat belt and wrapped herself around the baby. In doing so, she was severely injured hefself. After she missed 3 months of school, she returned to complete her year despite her physical disabilities. Her amaz- ingly positive attitude has always been there and she is admired by all in her community for her brave action and her determina- tion to overcome her injuries. *Kurtis Arnold, 11 of Essex for his brave action in saving the life of his friend Melissa Erickson who had slipped through broken ice into the frigid waters of a creek. He spread-eagled himself on a cracking, wavering ice sheet and slowly pulled his friend to safety. He wrapped his coat around her then ran with her for help. He had controlled his in- stinct to panic and instead took immediate and courageous action. He was the first on the scene im- mediately following the collision between a small car carrying eight young people and an on- coming truck. He toék control of the situation, instructing other drivers to call ambulances, ac- counting for victims, performing CPR on a young man, and conti- nuing to assist the injured until help arrived. *Lance Benns, 19 of Huntsville, who despite his blindness, has ac- complished high levels of achievements in his community. He is actively involved in pro- viding first aid at public functions as a corporal in the St. John Am- bulance Brigade. As an Air Cadet he has reached the rank of sergeant and he is a peer counsellor for Grade 9 students. He has been a leader in school and is considered an ambassador for the blind, educating sighted per- sons about blindness. *Georgina Blanas, 19, of Tot- _tenham for her leadership and commitment of time and energy in helping to improve her com- munity. As a member of the Com- munity Offering Police Support (COPS) committee she has been involved in crime prevention and was a moving force behind the setting up of a much needed Teen Centre. She organized fundraising: events, work parties and en- couraged other teens to get in- volved. With a fundrais- ing campaign and physical train- ing, he organized and ran 65 miles - from Toronto to Barrie. His hard work paid off and set the exam- ple for the rest of his people. *Roma-Lynn Kennedy, 17 of Rockwood for her determination in overcoming her physical disabilities and contributing and becoming a vital part of life at her high school. Following a car ac- cident, she was in a coma for 3 months and was given only a small chance of survival. A year later Roma has beaten all odds and despite a number of physical limitations is now back in school full time. She is currently practis- ing for her driving license. *Eric Larocque, 12 of L'Orignal for his quick thinking in saving the lives of his three young brothers and his parents when the family home was on fire. During the night, the fire broke out and the exterior of the house was in flames when Eric woke up. He roused his brothers and escorted them safely outside after break- ing a window. Eric's courageous act saved a family catastrophe. *Crystal Lavigne, 17 of Val Caron for her outstanding com- munity service. As chairman of the Youth Awareness Committee of Action Sudbury, she helps pro- mote awareness of needless in- jury and death resulting from drunken drivers. She is devoted to the cause and motivates adults and her peers in the community to campaign against drinking and driving. *Jessica MacDougall, of Amherstburg for her strength in * fighting the battle against cancer. As a member of a local youth cen- tre she actively encourages other teens to join and learn about themselves. She is a Counsellor in Training helping other cancer pa- tients to accept their lives involv- ing hospitalization and chemotherapy. She continues to attend school as often as her health allows and keeps up her studies. *Andrea Ou-Hingwan, 16 of Don Mills for her strength in overcom- ing a very serious illness. Andrea has Lupus. Her illness has given her a new insight and perspective and her focus now is to help as many Lupus victims as she can and educate people about this disease. She exemplifies the qualities of courage, determina- tion, compassion, humility and enthusiasm. *Kerrie Ann Slesser, 7 of Tiver- ton for her courageous attitude to life despite her severe handicap. She has a very rare disease and in fact is the only Canadian with Progeria. She handles this disease with courage, determina- tion and a keen sense of humour. As a full-time student, she open- ly discusses her handicap with others and puts great effort into all her work. She has adapted herself to all situations and does not succumb to self-pity.
