- . 36 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 19, 1989 RAH My Most Memorable Christmas 4 by Judy Stone I looked forward to Christmas that year with much anticipation. Our daughters were four and five - the perfect age to get caught up in the excitement and wonder of Christmas. We all awaited that special day ] when Santa would arrive with special gifts for everyone. Knowing that there were probably only a few more 4 years before our daughters discovered the "truth'" 4 about Santa Claus, I was determined to make that par- g§ ticular Christmas one to remember. My husband borrowed a Santa Claus suit a few days : before Christmas, and we both decided that a visit from St. Nicholas would be a wonderful idea. On Christmas 4 Eve, our daughters happily dressed in their PJ's, know- 4 ing that in only a few hours, the day they had long 4 awaited would soon be here. 3 After a goodnight kiss, my husband raced 4 downstairs, quickly donned the red suit, black boots and i : cap, and slipped quietly out the back door. We had ar- ranged a signal - when the light went off in my : a daughter's bedroom, he would count to ten, and then g ring the bell under her window. ] i With both girls safely tucked in bed, I turned off the a light. In a few seconds, the sound of Santa's bell drifted ] 4 toward her window. She sat bolt upright, eyes widened in surprise. : ; "What's that?" She bounded out of bed and raced to the window, where we both peered out. Happily mak- 4 : ing his way across our backyard was Santa! a My youngest daughter reached our side a split se- ] cond later, just in time to see Santa wave heartily and g blow them a kiss before making his way to the next backyard. Squeals of laughter abounded, and two enrap- 4 tured faces pressed up against the window hoping for one last glimpse. Another wave, another shake of the bell, and he was gone. i The look on my daughters' faces is something I will 1 never forget - their innocence something I will treasure forever. Santa Claus had truly worked his magic as he made his way through the backyard of 52 John Street. University students are gradually making a home trip for the Christmas season -- no doubt they will especially enjoy the seasonal fare - a pleasant change from cafeteria food. Many young people from this area attended two Junior Farmer dances over the weekend in Newcastle and Manvers. Please remember to call any Christmas news items in to me as soon as possible in order that they can appear in this column. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Fourteen U.C.W. ladies gathered at 12:30 p.m. on December 12 for their annual Christmas Pot Luck Lunch and meeting at the home of Jean Adams. After the wide variety of temptin dishes had been sampled, the singing of "This is the Day" brought the meeting to order. Grace Hall read the Prelude and Prologue to the Gospel of John, which really explains what Christmas is about, and closed the Worship with a beautiful prayer. Everyone participated toward the Program by reading favourite poems, readings, stories, jokes, cartoons, singing (trio), accor- dian selections and even a Christmas contest. The singing of "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" brought the meeting and a wonderful after- noon of fellowship to a close, Dec. 13 bridge results 3 Table Howell Avg. 25 1st - Marie Carnegie and Bon- nie Davies 28%, 2nd - Joyce Heard and Helen Mathieson 27%. 3rd - Doris Phinney and Otto Czilok 26%. 11 Table Mitchell Avg. 110 North/South 1st - Brenda and Jim Gilmour 149%. 2nd - Marie and Blake Vander- water 130%. 3rd - Thea Wenham and Dorothy Jacobs 121%.
