For 15 years Operation Scu- gog has been helping more and more local families celebrate Christmas. According to Anne Wannink- hof -- a social worker and one of the many dedicated workers at Operation Scugog -- the organi- zation will hand out food ham- pers to about 140 families this Christmas. The hampers will be filled with a turkey and all the trim- mings to make a Christmas din- ner, Mrs. Wanninkhof said. Food for the hampers is do- nated by local church groups, service clubs, businesses and residents. "Each year Operation Scugog gets a better response from the community ," Mrs. Wanninkhof said, but the number of families in need also rises. Last year, Operation Scugog helped 89 families. This year they will help 140. The names of the families re- main confidential, but Opera- tion Scugog lists the ages and clothing sizes of the family members. Mrs. Wanninkhof ex- plained that some organiza- tions also give gifts of clothing and toys to the needier families. "Instead of a Christmas ex- change (some businesses and groups) like to help a family," Mrs. Wanninkhofsaid. . This year, the food hampers will be given outon Dec. 21. "It's one heck of a day, but so very satisfying," Mrs. Wannink- hof said. The workers at Opera- tion Scugog get some much needed help from local students who carry the food hampers and other goodies out to the ¢ars. "The kids get a real kick out of it," she said. Families aren't the only indi- viduals who are helped by the organization. Heartwarming stories in Star's contest (From page 1) But really, all of them are winners, as far as we're con- cerned. Judging these stories truly was a difficult task. The judges worked on a 50- mark system, based on 10 marks each for style, impact, quality of writing, idea, and overall impression. Our first place story was" submitted by Mrs. M. J. Joyce of Prince Albert, a heart-warming look back at a family Christmas in the Great Depression The judges were touched by the writing style, the vivid de- scriptions, but mostly by the poignancy of a family giving and sharing in perhaps the truest meaning of the Christ- mas spirit. : This story, and the five honourable mentions are re- printed in this edition of the Port Perry Star.
