Scugog teens volunteer [ENE at Community Memorial [g& Hospital as candystripers Sa A few short months ago Port Perry Community Hospital was in desparate need of Teen Volunteers(candystripers), to- day they have a more than ade- quate staff. According to Teen Volunteer co-ordinator Ann Tielemans when she took over this posi- tion this past September , the hospital had only two candys- tripers. Three monthslater, the hospital is"full up" with 28 vol- unteers. Candystripers start at age 13, and usually. go up to about16 or 17 years of age. "The starting age used to be 15, but it has n lowered to 13. At 13, they can work, and we feel they want to do it, also teenagers have a lot of compas- sion at that age," Mrs. Tiele- mans said. , She added that by the time Approve lights for intersection of Hwy 47& 23 A traffic study at the inter- section of Highway 47 and Dur- ham Road 23, just east of Ux- bridge has be completed, and the results indicate that traffic signals are needed. In a letter to Scugog Town- ship Council, K.B. Maynard, head of the traffic section, Min- istry of Transportation, says the intersection has been added « to their signal installation pro- gramme. i But he also indicates it takes considerable lead time for the ~.. planning and design of the sig- 1. nals before installation can oc- cur, and would not give a time forinstallation. In the interim, Mr. Maynard says he is recommending that additional red flashers be in- stalled on top of the Stop signs on Regional Road 23. "This ex- tra warning of the stop condi- tion should be effective in in- creasing motorists awareness of the intersection", he con- cludes.
