In a year end interview with the Star, the Mayor said his council will have to make a crucial decision, likely this year about what direction the com- munity will move during the decade of the nineties. "Speaking personally, yes, I want to see Scugog grow with new homes and industry," he stated. But he added that if there is to be any growth of a substan- tial nature, it is tied directly to the need for an expanded sew- age treatment facility for Port Perry. The lagoon-cell system is virtually at capacity now and new growth is severely limited in Port Perry. - Durham Region, which op- erates the treatment system, is now in the process of preparing a report which will spell out all the technical requirements and the costs of expansion. That report is expected some time in the next couple of months. It will be the local council that will have to make the deci- sion on whether to proceed with the expanded treatment facility and the rate of new growth that _ it will bring. "I expect those decisions will be made this year," he told the Star. Not only would a new treat- ment facility mean more resi- dential growth on smaller lots in the immediate Port Perry Proper development one of ~ Mayor's priorities for 1990 area, it could open up land for industrial development as well. The current lack of indus- trial land on full services is a se- rious draw-back to new indus- tries locating in Scugog, said the Mayor. Without an expanded treatment facility, he suggested that Scugog's growth over the next decade would be sporadic --and slow, a few small subdivi- sions in some of the rural ham- lets of the Township, or on "es- tate-style" lots. The environmental factors of putting homes on wells and septic systems would limit the amount of growth. Two car collision kills 3 family members A tragic accident New Years Day near Blackstock has claimed three lives, and left two others in hospital with serious injuries. The two car accident oc- curred shortly after 3:00 PM on Durham Road 57, just south of the intersection of Concession Line 4. Regional Police say the three victims are Joanna Op- pers, 68, of Nestleton; her daughter Lucy Knight, 39 of 337 Ormond Drive, Oshawa; and ten-year old Adam Knight of the same address. Candace Knight, 14, was rushed to Oshawa Hospital with serious injuries and her condition has been listed as crit- ical.
