a das cal? ee Tony Sortino had to be more than sharp and get a little help from his friends like de- fenseman Warren Geer (10) as the MoJacks knocked off first place Bowmanville 7-5 on Dec. 28. Sortino faced 30 tough shots from the Eagle snipers. He has had some big games in a MoJack uniform since joining the club in late November. The Markham native seems to thrive when the going gets tough, and he'll likely get the nod from coach Ken Harman when the MoJacks meet the Eagles this coming Saturday evening In Bowmanville. On Sun- day night (Jan: 7) the MoJacks play host to the Uxbridge Bruins with face-off at 7:30. This should be an Interesting match If past outings between the two clubs are any Indication. The Port Perry Petites, spon- sored by Bruton's IDA, brought home the championship trophy from the Annual Christmas Tour- nament in Markham. This well- organized tournament involved 88 teams of different levels, and was played in 5 arenas. The Petites were matched against teams from Markham, Oshawa, Picker- ing, Stayner, and Hamilton, and were certainly not the favourites going into the games. The first game was against the Oshawa 2 team who matched Port in size and in numbers. However, our team came out flying and began a scoring rampage with less than two minutes gone in the first period. With excellent pass- ing, many breakaways, and strong defence when it was need- ed, the Port girls won the game 11-2. Katie Senyk was steady in net as she faced hard shots from several of their larger players. The goals were spread over all the lines, with many assists being awarded as a result of constant team work. Assists were given to Brandy Harris, Joan Anderson, Cara Vander Slagt, Natasha Burgess, Cindy Verschurren, Michelle Branton, Dana Hooker, and Lynda Payne. Cara and Joan both scored 3 goals, Brandy and Natasha 2 goals, and Cindy 1 goal. Game 2 saw Port meet their friendly rival, and Consolation winner, from Stayner. This small but fast team had our girls scrambl- ing until Port finally came alive. Because of the style of play, Port had to rely on their "big guns" to score: Brandy netted 7 goals, and Joan finished off with 4 more, one of them a short-handed goal. However, a lot of persistant hard work went on in Ports end, and without the penalty killing skills of our defence, it would have been a different ending. On several oc- casions, the Port white stick was in the penalty box, and Jenny Storms, Le-anne Wakeford, Katie, Melissa Pereman, and Melissa Dawson put up a solid front for Shona. Again, the assists show the team work that was in- volved in the scoring. Dana, Katie, Le-anne, Natasha, and Cara each were awarded 2 assists, Jenny, Melissa P. and Melissa D. were given 1. The final score was 11-2 for Port Perry. Port met their host team in Game 3 with some anxiety. Katie was in net to face this fast skating squad from Markham II. With the skills of their very tall and talented white stick, Markham spent the first three minutes of the game in the Port end with Katie having to make some spec- tacular stops. Brandy opened the scoring of the game, followed by a power play goal by Lynda with two Markham players in the box. Two minutes later, Markham got their own power play goal. The strong point of this game was our defence, showing hustle, deter- mined fights for the ring, and a solid blockade in front of Katie. Special mention to Shona, Jenny and Melissa P. who made the dif- ference. Goals were scored by Brandy with 3, Lynda with 2, and Cara with 1. Assists were spread over the team, going to Le-anne, Mandy Smart, Melissa D., Bran- dy, Lynda, and Cara. The final score was 6-2 for Port. Port travelled back on Satur- day to face this same Markham II team in the Semi-final game. Dana and Natasha both had something special to offer this game and were going full speed through-out. . the. game. Dana - Petites win a thriller scored 2 times with 3 assists. Brandy scored 4 times with 2 assists. Natasha and Lynda both scored 1. Assists went to Cara with 4, Shona and Melissa P. each with 1. Melissa D., who had been playing while ill with the flu, and Le-anne both stole the ring from their astonished opponents several times, and made their shifts on defence really count. The final score was an unbelievable 8-4 for Port Perry. With Katie in net, Port played the Championship Game against Markham I. This game was ex- citing, filled with penalties, and also filled with many spectacular saves by our goalie. After a scoreless first period in which the two teams seemed perfectly well matched, Cindy got thé all- important first goal after only a minute of the second period, followed closely by a goal from Brandy and assisted by Mandy. With three Port players in the penalty box, Markham scored twice and then Coach Dan Har- ris's strategy took over. Lynda did an excellent job of ragging the puck for almost a minute and passing off to Brandy at just the right time so she could finish kill- ing the penalty. The spectators thought we would see overtime, as the score was 2-2°in the last minute of the game. With 35 seconds remaining, Brandy scored the big one, but just as big was the amazing save Katie made as Markham's strongest player got a breakaway and took a sizzl- ing shot on net with just 12 seconds left. The final score of this game was 3-2 for Port Perry. The coaches share the pride that the team felt as they ac- cepted the impressive first place trophies, and they want to thank the girls for their effort, team work and their willingness to co- operate: with the coaching suggestions. The next game will be on January 7, at 12:30 when Picker- ing comes to Port Perry for the first game of our Home Tourna- ment, to be held on January 12, 13 and 14. Their first game saw them mat- ched up with a team called Pete Everett. This was a very close game as several attempts were made to light the scoreboard by both teams. By the end of the regulation time Port was at a tie with their opponent. Sudden death overtime kept Port on the edge of their seat}, but not for long as Port found the net at the midway point of overtime. Scoring for Port was Greg Bruton with 2 goals and Steve Nagie with the winning goal. MVP for Van Camp was Jon Chambers who played net for Van Camp and made several spec- tacular saves. Their second game was against a team from Ajax. Port needed this win to qualify for the semi- finals and that's what they did. Coming from behind in the third period, Port stole the win from Ajax in the last minutes of play. Scoring for Port was Greg Bruton with 2 goals. Jamie Clark 1 goal, Jon Froats 1 goal. Jon Froats was also named MVP for Van Camp. Port once again came up against a very strong team from Ajax. Although Ajax took the lead early in the game, Port showed they're a tough team to.béat. A valiant effort was made by all and theit t effort was evident as they continued to play catch-up hockey with Ajax. Port came out on the bottom side of a score of 8-3. Scoring for Port was Aaron Chambers, Greg Bruton and Jamie Clark, MVP for Van Camp was Jamie Clark. Drawing assists on the goals of these games were Jason Gunn, Keith Hancock, Ben Stephenson, Devon Symes, Ashleigh Murphy, Chad Lance, Casey Brown, Jeff Ashton, Todd Mitchell and Chris Orr.
