cn ---- -- ---- SE idl 28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, January 3, 1990 During the Christmas break the Port Perry Legion Pee Wees com- peted in the annual Christmas Classic, held in Bowmanville. With wins over Oshawa Red Wings, Peterborough "A's" and Welland, the Legion squad ad- vanced to the "A" Division finals. Port's first game of the tourna- ment was against the Oshawa Red Wings. The boys came out flying and Sean Ellis knocked in a Jay Treadway rebound to give Port a one goal lead within a minute of the game. Both teams showed some strong defense for six minutes until Sean scored his second of the game off the re- boynd from a hardshot by Scott Heasman. A few minutes later Kenton Lefort dug the puck out of the cor- ner, went around the net and made a nice pass to Billy Zaparanuik who one timed it in. Port has some good chances in the second, but couldn't capitalize, until late in the second when on an excellent effort Jay. T. scored off an excellent rush by Sean Ellis, Craig Laird who was back for the first time since he broke his wrist, also picked up an assist. The boys came out sluggish in the third but managed to hold on to a 4-2 victory. December 26 at 8:00 a.m. they met the Bowmanville team and lost this one 2-0. In the afternoon they played against the London team and despite many chances the score was against them 4-3. At the end of the first period, Port was ahead 3-1. Derek Leeming put the first goal in with a nice passing play by Matt Phillips and Mike Morden. London then tied it up. Kevin Hobbs with a great shot put Port ahead again on a pass from Robert Gracje who was playing wing in this game. Kevin Hobbs got his second of the game, unassisted, with a minute to go in the first. London came back to score three unanswered goals and win 4-3. Wednesday morning, Port played against a well disciplined Port Colbourne team and dropped this one 6-1. The only marker for Port was scored by Kevin Cochrane on a pass from Shane Norton half way through the se- cond period. - Wednesday night Port met Stouffville and came up victorious 3-1in an exciting end to end game. Justin Halligan notched Port's first for the only goal scored in the first period. Assist to a hard work- ing defenseman, Trevor Smith. The only goal scored in the second period was on a great shot by Matt Phillips on an effort from both Shane Norton and Chris Drury. Each team scored once in the third. Matt Phillips picking up his second of the game on a nice pass from Kevin Cochrane. These guys welcomed Jamie Trick who shared the duties between the pipes with Paul Shrigley. Jamie came up with some fine blocker and stick saves. The Atom B's have had some tough luck around the nets in their last two league games against Manvers and Millbrook coming up scoreless in both. Their next league game is in Uxbridge Satur- day January 6, at 7:00 p.m. Nice effort by Midget B The Canadian Tire Midget B's, played their first league game against Newcastle on Tuesday December 14. This was a very fast paced game and a real see- saw battle for the first two periods. The Port team matched the Newcastle team goal for goal, (3-3), but with the Canadian Tire players short handed they couldn't hold on indefinitely. Brad Budge and David Volman, two hard working defensemen did a good job of keeping the Newcas- tle team in check. Noel Lovering and Dereck Carter shared the goaltending duties with both play- ing well. Adam Cummings, out for the first time with the team proved to be a real asset and assisted on the first goal scored by Kevin Brown. David Volman assisted Kevin on his second goal and Troy McCul- ly scored the third and final goal assisted by Herb Hatch. In the third period the Newcas- tle team put the pressure on and were able to score. There was a lot of cheering in the stands on Monday December 18 when the Port Perry Midget B's took to the ice in a rematch with Sunderland. The Canadian Tire team completely dominated the first period racking up 5 goals and allowing Sunderland only 1. Scoring for Port Perry were Stuart Dyer, Craig Leask, Kevin Brown, Kevin Buscher, Cole PREY APS, SEER SIRNA xs vn ASA ww WEVRRAVE wey vag pis.tocaghin Pe ta deiense, Assisting on these goals were Adam Cummings, Michael Butt, Kevin Brown, Cole Parry and Jeff Lebanovich. This was a real team effort. The game plan broke down in the second period and Sunderland tied up the score. The between - period break gave the team an op- portunity to regain its focus and the players came out in the third period ready to control the puck and play good positional hockey. The strategy paid off and the home team fired in 3 goals. Gerry Stevens scored twice assisted by Stuart Dyer and Kevin Brown and then Stuart Dyer scored the third assisted by Brad Budge and Scott Menzies. The best game the Canadian Tire Midgets have played to date was in Sunderland on December 23. This game ended in a 1-1 tie and both teams gave the fans some real thrills. Stuart Dyer scored the teams lone goal with assists to Kevin Brown and Gerry Stevens. Most evident was the excellent passing and positional play by Craig Leask, Herb Hatch and Gerry Stevens. Scott Menzies, Troy McCully and Kevin Buscher did a super job on defense con- sistently clearing the puck out of their own end. Newcomer, Mark McGill looks like a steady skillful player and will be a welcome addition to the borough. Folks, this game was a tight one from start to finish. Coaches Geer and Teno told the boys that they wanted 5 points out of this game. (half point for each period, 1 point for period won and 2 points for a win of the game.) To succeed in doing this, Geer and Teno told us that we'd have to throw our weight around, pass the puck effectively and skate Peterborough into the ice. The first period was scoreless as both goalies came up big! Peterborough opened the scoring at 6:34 of the second frame but three minutes later Port scored on the power play. As practiced, two men were battling along the boards for the puck, Ellis and Laird. Ellis got the puck behind the net, over to Laird in the corner and right back to Norton on the blueline who then let a shot go and BINGO!! Short side, tie game, 1 apiece. Later on, in the third frame Ellis got the puck, deked all of Peterborough and ripped it home from ten feet, right in the top shelf. Way to go Sean-boy. 'Unassisted. Beauty. Port now had the lead with just three minutes left. Peterborough came right back though, stealing the puck and scoring on a breakaway. Both teams were now facing sudden death overtime but only five seconds left on the clock Treadway, who plays like Cam Neely, night in, night out, got the puck to hard working Ellis. who ;got two or three whacks at it 'before scoring. The Port bench was going nuts! Unbelievable! This was a con- The Malmont farms travelled to Bowmanville for their Christmas Classic Tournament and came away with the "D" championship. Their first match-up in the round robin was against Cobourg. Port's effort was valiant and the game was much closer than the score indicates. Port, short 3 players was only able to cash in on one goal on a play set up by Tommy Chambers to Brad Shanley who put the puck behind the goalie to light the scoreboard. This goal tied the game in the first period but Port was soon to give up the game as Port went down to defeat 5-1. Their second game saw them up against Lindsay. Port was all fired up and with a full team of 'players on the ice were confident of a win. They controlled the game from the outset. This was evident as Tim Fitzpatrick quick- ly cashed in with 2 goals early in the first period. Second period saw Tim Fitz- patrick once again find the top corner of the net completing his hat trick. The final goal in the last minute of play saw Kevin Gray set up in front of the net, putting the puck home once again. Drawing the assist was Tommy Chambers. Also drawing assists were Daryl McEnaney with 2 and Todd Parry. Port took the win away from Lindsay with a score of 5-1. On Friday morning Port played Stouffville and came out on the bottom end of a very close game. Both teams played a strong game with plenty of end to end action. Neither team was willing to give anything up, making this a very exciting game. A team effort was evident as Port continued to move the puck up the ice making several at- traversial call as the Peter- borough coaches were furious as they thought the goaltender had it, but they all count! The whole team put out a huge effort out- shooting the opposition 23 to 8. The defence stood every Peter- borian up at the blueline putting them three feet into the ice and right through the boards. Steven Gilbert played outstan- ding between the pipes covering the puck superbly every time Peterborough threatened. Fan- tastic game!!! GAME 3 Port's third game in the Bowmanville Tournament was an excellent display of forechecking, hard work and determination by the boys. Port got on the board first when Kenton potted one from a nice pass from Billy. In the second period, Sean Ellis blasted a shot in the top right hand corner with Jay Tredway picking up the assist. With the score two-zip for Port, Dave tipped one in after some hard work by Joe who got an assist along with Jeremy Geer. Thirty seconds later Dave put in his second with the assists go- ing to Jeremy Geer and Jay King. But with two seconds left, Welland scored what would be their only goal of the game. At the end of the two periods the score stood Port - 4, Welland - 1. In the third, Port came out flying and scored another five goals. The first came from Jay Tredway with good work in front of the net and Sean and Jay King picked up the assists. A few minutes later Jay King scored his first of the held up their end of the ice as Port's offence tried to cash in without success. Luck was with Stouffville as they finally found the net, taking the win away from Port with a 1-0 score. ; With total points tallied, Port qualified for the "D" champion- ship on Friday night. Once again, Port came out all fired up cashing in with a goal in the first minute of play. Their opponents were also determined to win as they held the lead 2-1 by the end of the first period. but that was soon to Legionaires advance to 'A' finals season with a nice shot from the point. . A good solo effort gave Sean his second of the game. Jeremy Nor- ton then broke in from the point and put a dandy into the right side. One minute later, Jeremy again spun around the net and scored his second to wrap up both the game and a berth in the Championship. Excellent games were played by Jeremy Geer and Daryl Bourgeois who did a fine, wonderful job filling in for Chad and Neil. Great game guys. GAME 4 After winning their first three matches, the Legionnaires faced the Toros from Bowmanville in the "A" championship. With Chad still out, Steve Gilbert's injured foot and Neil's twisted knee, Daryl Bourgeois, Brent Harper, Jeremy Geer and James Patter- son (who backed up goalie Pashley) all played a great game. ~ Although Port came out on the losing side, 3-1, every member of the team put out a tremendous ef- fort and a tough game. Port's only goal came from Tredway, midway through the third from Norton. After taking the pass from Norton, Tredway was in one on one, fought off the defencemen and went upstairs with the rubber. Great goal Jay!! Mike Pashley played between the pipes in this contest and was call- ed upon many a time, coming up with some humongous saves. Great tournament all around boys. The Legion's next action is this Friday at 9:15. Come out and see a great team in action. Atom A's inClassic event change as the second and third . period belonged to Port. This gave them the win of 5-3. This was definitely a team effort adding special mention to defencemen Jeff Clarke, Jason Loban, Mike Heasman and Rob- bie Murphy. Scoring in this game were Tom- my Chambers 2 goals, 1 assist, Daryl McEnaney 2 goals, Ken Johnstone 1 goal, 1 assist, Todd Parry, Jason Logan, Jeff Clarke, Brad Morton and Brad Shanley 1 assist each. - Accidents can be prevented There are far too maay underage drivers using the trails groomed and maintained by the Port Perry Snowmobile Club.
