On proposals for its role in the future PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, January 3, 1990 -- 3 < Durham Health Council asks for feed-back Catherine Hilge, Chairman of the Durham Region District Health Council, has announced that Council will be seeking writ- ten feedback from all health and social service agencies and organizations across Durham Region on 'a proposed future role' for the Durham Region District Health Council. ~ Over the last year district health councils, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health, developed a discussion paper en- titled, 'Future Directions for District Health Councils: Renew- ing Our Partnership in Plann- ing." This document, which was endorsed by Health Minister Elinor Caplan in October, sug- gests some enhancement of the role of district health councils. Currently, Councils are man- dated to provide advice to the Minister of Health on local health needs. Specifically, their role is: - to identify health needs and con- sider alternative ways of meeting those needs, that are consistent with provincial guidelines; - to plan a comprehensive health care program and establish short COMPARE THE RATE! 1% 165 QUEEN ST., PORT PERRY 985-8435 term priorities that are consistent with long term goals; - to coordinate all health activities and ensure a balanced, effective and economical service that is satisfactory to the community and - to work towards cooperation in the social development activities for the district. "Future Directions' describes four functions which are con- sidered to be enhanc. ments to the existing role of dist ict health councils. They involve the provi- sion of advice in four areas: - allocation of funds - district health manpower requirements - area-wide planning - integrating health and social ser- vices planning Having reviewed this provincial paper, and recognizing the many implications of an enhanced role, Council felt strongly that there should be considerable communi- ty consultation around these issues. In order to facilitate this process, Council developed a community discussion paper which identifies the direction of its future role. The deadline for submissions is February 28.
