4 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, January 3, 1990 The Toronto/Havelock Pas- senger Association has sent in- vitations to the mayors of 31 Ontario communities inviting them to a meeting to hear pro- posals for a new passenger rail service in this province. The January 9 meeting slated for Toronto City Hall, comes less than a week before VIA Rail pulls the daily train between Toronto and Havelock off the rails because of federal spending cut-backs. THPA president Paul Pag- nuelo of Little Britain, said last | week the January 9 meeting will give the mayors a chance to hear the details of a proposal to have Bombardier Inc., of Mon- treal operate four passenger lines in southern Ontario, using rolling stock it manufactures. Andres Darvarsi, a director of marketing for Bombardier will attend the meeting. Bombardier has already expressed an interest in the idea of operating four passenger lines, but the company wants to thoroughly examine the feasi- bility with input from communi- ties that could be served by the lines f th al e aspect of the pro being put forward by the THPA is to have municipalities oper- ate the stations and parking fa- cilities along the lines. The proposal calls for Mon- day to Frida passenger service Peterborough, Cobourg, Brant- ford and Kitchener to Toronto. Mr. Pagnuelo said he hopes the mayors, including Toronto's Art Eggleton, will throw their support behind the concept, and perhaps agrees to become in- volved in an in-depth feasibility study. Many residents of Scugog Township and surrounding area used the Toronto/Havelock VIA service to commute to their Jobsin the city. The Passenger Association led by Mr. Pagnuelo has lobbied hard to retain the service, to no avail. The federal government will not back down on the reduc- tions to VIA subsidies, and the provincial government has stat- ed it will not step in and bail out any service abandoned by Otta- wa. Most commuters in this area will ride the VIA train for the last time on January 12, a Friday, and Mr. Pagnuelo said he expects many former users to join the passengers for the last ride home that day. However, he hopes that with the initiatives to Bombar- dier, passenger service will be restored some time in the fu- ture. Association to unveil rail net-work plans (MH KM) CAV.
