4 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 16, 1990 Council challenges Brock, Uxbridge in Bowl for Millions The Big Brothers/Big Sisters Association of North Durham held a kick-off reception for their Bowl For Millions fund- raiser recently. But organizers soon found out that a refresher course in bowling terminology was des- perately needed. Local Mayor Howard Hall and Brock Mayor Don Hadden seemed to be taking the term "strike" out of context when dis- cussing whose municipality was going to win the total pin Neither Mayor had the upper hand in this battle. At the last Bowl For Millions event, held two years ago, Uxbridge Mayor Gerri Lynn O'Connor and her Sestumates took home the tro- phy. The popular bowl-a-thon was not held in the North Durham chapter last year because of a lack of manpower, said area di- rector Sue Scholfield at the re- ception. After rejuvenating the organ- ization, Big Brothers/Big Sis- ters of North Durham are ready to get the balls rolling once again. Members of the North Dur- ham chapter have been scout- ing the two bowling alleys in the area to encourage local bowlers to get involved in the bowl-a- thon. Organizations, businesses, local politicians, and service clubs are also invited to partici- pate in the week-long fundrais- er. The Port Perry Lion's Club is entering a team in the bowl-a- thon and at the reception an- nounced that the Lion's Club will challenge all other local ser- vice clubs to get involved. Big Brothers/Big Sisters of North Durham do not receive any funding from the United Way or other social service group. The bowl-a-thon is its main fundraising tool. "Our service is increasing," said Mrs. Scholfield, explaining that as the population increases in the three townships, so does the need for more partners for thelittle brothers and sisters. Anyone who would like to bowl in the fundraiser may pick up a pledge sheet at Scugog Centennial Lanes or Uxbridge Lanes. League bowlers will bowl their game for Big Brothers/Big Sisters during regular league play on the week of Feb. 3-10. Organizations, service clubs, businesses and politicians will bowl on Celebrity Day (Satur- day, Feb. 10) at either the Ux- bridge or Scugog bowling alleys. Prizes will be awarded to the persons with the most monies raised. First prize includes a trip for two to Las Vegas partially do- nated by Nonquon Travel; sec- ond prize a compact disc player donated by House of Howard; and third prize a $125 gift cer- tificate from Port Perry Canadi- an Tire. For the first year ever, prizes will be awarded to youth bowl- ers.
