Axworthy could only raise about $200,000.00; one quarter of what he thought it would take to become Liberal leader. The limousine Liberals have set a whopping $1.7 Million limit on their leadership race. This con- trasts with the $150,000.00 limit during the recent New Democrat Leadership convention. Audrey McLaughlin, the eventual winner of the NDP's leadership race, spent much less than what Ax- worthy has actually raised. This is one reason why Susan Hart-Kulbaba and myself, as co- chairs of the NDP Leadership Convention, established strict limits on spending and contribu- tions including a $1,000.00 limit on donations. It seems that after all is said and done, Lloyd Axworthy is a victim of the power of the cor- |S 3{010] 24 4 TUNE- UP SPECIAL S55 CYUNDER $5087 Vv os JOB VS iter siamennunees 658 * LABOUR ONLY, parts extra * Vans and Air-conditioned Vehicles, extra. Therefore he could not run. In addition, Axworthy makes the assumption that these cor- porate financial decision makers were against him because he op- posed the free trade agreement, What do these same financial powers expect Paul Martin or Jean Chretien to do (not what they will say before an election but what they would actually do) 'on the issue of free trade or other matters of concern to corporate Canada? Big business must feel secure that its voice as well as its money will be received favourably by the two front runners for the Liberal leadership. Put bluntly, the message Cana- dians are getting is clear - without the backing of rich corporate donors, one cannot lead the Liberal Party. Sincerely, Rod Murphy, M.P.
