Monday night at home, coaches Geer, Teno, and Burnett had the benefit of their full lineup for the first time since October. All hands turned in 100 percent, allowing the Legionaires to nip the powerful Stouffville Clippers 2-1. The vic- tory was keyed by an outstanding goaltending performance from Steve Gilbert, as the Clippers had numerous quality shots. Their on- ly goal came with a man advan- tage late in the game. After a scoreless first period, Jay Tredway put Port on the board, taking a pass from Sean Ellis. Jay moved around the re- maining defenceman, then beat the goalie with a hard, low drive to the corner. Sean upped the lead later in the period after Jeremy Norton blocked a hard Clippers wlmtedoinebedndeienhadedaddadadnkmintadadabatodnbe THE ARUN r«-=-=-=---m==-=-=-=-=----==me= BED, BATH & GIFT BOUTIQUE 5 Points Mall - Oshawa Match the Name to the Store & Receive a Further 10% OFF Sale Prices OPEN 9:30 AM to 9:30 PM I -- | 579-7213 SHOP EARLY Ay Winter Hours: Monday t FOR BES o Saturday 9:30 shot. Sean picked up the rebound from Jeremy's aching shin and roared in to score shorthanded. Although Stouffville threatened at times, the Legionaires main- tained enough intensity to support Steve's heroics and hang on to the win. Wednesday night saw another large obstacle of Port's 'playoff hopes' come to town, in the per- son of the Cobourg Pee Wees. The tempo of this game was slightly below that of the previous match, but still well worth the price of ad- mission for excitement. Cobourg opened the scoring early in the second period, when a shot took a dirty hop off a Port stick past a helpless Mike Pashley. Just over three minutes later, Sean picked up Craig Laird's pass and motored down the left wing. With Jay T. in the slot as a decoy, Sean blasted a sharp-angled shot in on the short side. Before the period ended Chad Kearns gained the zone on a power play rush, dropped the puck to Jay T., who threaded a perfect pass to Sean off the cor- ner of the net. Just like that it was 2-1 Port. The tension built as Port pick- ed up a penalty with 1:23 left in the game. Cobourg pulled the . goalie and, playing 6 on 4, scored at the :41 mark to tie the game. However, Port wasn't finished and some strong forechecking by Chad, Jay T. and Sean set up a face-off with :06 remaining. With Cobourg charging the point, Sean cooly won the face-off stepped around the opposing cen- tre, and fired the puck into the corner at the :04 mark. Mike's steady goaltending and Sean's hat trick provided Port with another giant step toward the playoffs. Friday night, the team took to the road and did not fare as well in the wilds of Stouffville. Chad opened the scoring with an unassisted wrap-around goal, but Geoff Smith took only 15 seconds to tie it with his first of four for the Clippers. Port was down 5-1 before Sean closed the gap slight- ly on a nice show of determina- tion, his second shorthanded goal of the week. Stouffville scored again late in the third, then Chad closed out the scoring with :42 seconds left, tak- ing Joe Broadworth's pass in the circle to fire it in the far side. The Clippers came away with a 6-3 win in spite of Mike's super netminding. The Legionaires will travel to Cobourg Tuesday to try and guarantee themselves a spot in the next round, 68 WATER ST., PORT PERRY 985-9888 Sunday to Thursday - Noon to 8:30 PM Open to 10 PM - Friday & Saturday
