Staffing and PTRs had been the main stumbling block for the teachers in these negoti- ations which went to the media- tion stage. Under this contract, a top rated teacher will be paid $58,830 per year, after 13 years experience, though this is still $700 less per annum than teachers with similar experi- ence and qualifications earn in the public board in Durham. And it takes public teach- ers just ten years to reach the maximum, rather than 13. Although the teachers rati- fied the pact and dropped the work-to-rule campaign, Mike O'Connor, chief negotiator for the teachers is quoted as saying he is not totally satisfied with the agreement, and when the next bargaining session rolls around in 1991, the teachers will be going after larger wage increases. While things got back to normal in the Region's Separate elementary schools last week, the strike by high school teach- ers dragged on. And on January 24, Separ- ate Board chairman Catharine Tunney issued a tough-worded statement saying the Board will not change its policy on wage parities with other school boards. "We cannot afford to play the parity game," said Ms. Tun- ¥ English language secon- dary teachers in the Separate system are asking for wage par- ity with elementary teachers in the public system. This group has rejected the 12.2 wage hike over two years. Ms. Tunney said that agreeing to the higher wage de- mands of the secondary teach- ers would be "betraying the faith of ratepayers and the three other teacher groups" in the Separate system. "We believe our wage set- tlements should be based on what our (Catholic) ratepayers can afford, not what the rate- payers in some other area can afford," she stated.
