Sorry, we forgot to mention that last Monday was the 89th birth- day of our life long resident John Sweetman, now of Fairview. If he gets the Scugog news, we hope he receives our best wishes and realizes that we hold him in high esteem. Most of us have had experience with Scouting through the train- ing of our own boys and their precious memories or maybe many have helped in the training. The boys start at an early age as Cubs & Beavers, but when they need advanced experience and training it seems difficult to get interested leaders. So at this time we are again sending out an ap- peal for interested leaders to con- SCUGOG ISLAND NEWS BY MRS. EARL READER sider it and send in their name early so that training can be ar- ranged and plans formed for The Groups Activities. Even if you cannot be a leader, Paris can help in other areas or the Cubs/Beavers who are very enthusiastic but help is need- ed to raise finances to support the activities. One project is a bake sale and 50/50 draw. So this gives 3 opportunities in baking, buying and selling tickets. The date will be Sat. Feb. 17 -- 10 a.m. to 12 noon. So please do call Penny Kutlik (985-3730) or Jan. Gerrow (985-3025) and talk it over. If you would like to understand and learn more about the ac- tivities you are welcome to attend Quiz and judging part of 4-H contest A new 4-H Inter-County Dairy Judging Competition is being organized by the Dairy Breed Associations, Artificial Insemina- tion Units, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, and the 4-H Leaders' Association. This com- petition is to be held at the Univer- sity of Guelph on Wednesday, August 8th and Thursday, August 9, 1990. . The objectives of the competi- tion are: 1. To develop young people and assist them in making decisions. 2. To teach 4-H members in evaluating dairy cattle. 3. To assist 4-H members in ex- pressing themselves. 4. To expose youth to Agriculture Colleges in Ontario. 5. To give competition beyond the local level. 6. To develop judges for the future. Two member teams are being invited to participate from each country in Ontario. Contestants will be invited to judge nine classes of dairy cattle and to give oral reasons on six of the classes. There will also be a quiz on general knowledge of judging and show ring procedures. The com- petition will begin in Guelph in 1990, and be moved to other Agricultural Colleges across the province in the future. Winners will be eligible to compete in selected American Judging Competitions. Senior Citizen Club welcomes Senior's President Bill Harper welcomed the members and O'Canada was sung. So lets make this a successful year in Scouting. The morning service on Sunday at the Island United Church was varied, extremely interesting and inspiring. As it was the Day for Holy Communion, the children were given special information for the meaning and experience. Prior to the congregational an- nual meeting at the church, Wed. Jan. 31 at 8 p.m. annual reports were received for study of the years activities and ac- complishments in the Scugog Pastoral Charge. Re: the above report, I'm temp- ted to make a few personal remarks. It is the most attractive report I've ever seen and I have collected many through the years. The bright, yellow front page with characteristic printing and design is an outstanding introduction to the enclosed, clear information on various coloured pages according to the divisions. It took me all the way riding to Barrie to study it and I was very impressed with the work involv- ed in collecting and arranging the PORT PERRY b PRINCE ALBERT UNITED CHURCH Rev. D. Robert J.
