E-X-C-I-T-E-M-E-N-T. These girls displayed aggressive checking, accurate passing and sharp shooting in each of the 4 games they played inthe Ottawa Winterlude Ringette Tournament held this past weekend. In the first game Friday night, the Green Creek team was unable to crack our defensive lines of Bonni-Jo Norton and Brooke Shanley, and Pam Hiltz and Jan- na Senyk. Absolutely no shots were taken on Mandi Wakeford for a shutout of 13-0. Port's goals were scored by Janine Hammond 4; Alechia Cracknell 3; Jennifer Elliot and Laura Hooker with a pair each; Brooke and Jenny Lane with 1 each; Jennifer Don- nelly, Diane Vanderligt, Jennifer Hammond and Milissa Hooker contributed to the score by mak- ing many important assists and sharing in the total of 32 shots on goal. Jennifer Donnelly and Pam Hiltz deserve mention for playing their best game of the season. The second game, played against Ottawa early Saturday, was a reflection of the first game with only a few shots on our goalie Jennifer Hammond - none of which got past her. Alechia scored 5 big ones this game and the remaining goals were scored by Janine, Laura, Jenny Lane and Jennifer Elliot with a pair each and Diane and Janna with 1 each. Final score 15-0. Once again the Eaglettes were a powerhouse in the third game against Oshawa. They complete- ly dominated the first period leading the score 2-0 and out- shooting them 13-7. Oshawa's For all your NEW or USED CAR NEEDS with excellent service, contact sales rep., JEFF KROONENBERG goalie made some outstanding saves as did our goalie Mandi Wakeford, both of whom kept the fans, coaches and players on the tip of their seats. Early in the second period, Oshawa found the perfect spot in the net, then a second time to tie it up 2-2. Alechia fired another shot between the posts to bring Port in the lead 3-2. During the last few minutes of the game, we experienced some bad luck and during this misfortune Oshawa grabbed some quick goals to win the game. The whole team put forth 100 percent effort and real- ly deserved to win the game as they truly played their best and most exciting game of the season. Congratulation Alechia for scor- ing each of the 3 goals. Unfor- tunately, this loss meant we no longer had a chance for the gold or silver on Sunday. However, we did earn a chance for the bronze. Pembroke started the scoring off early in the first period and then Diane opened our scoring streak. Not long after, Laura back handed 2 more beautifully. For a while Port held the lead 3-2, then decided to get serious, Jennifer Elliot earned 2 goals, Mandi Warkford, Alechia, Janine and Laura each scored once. Throughout the game our defen- sive lines were overpowering as usual defending our goalie Jen- nifer Hammond who made some super saves. The Eaglettes cap- tured the Bronze division winning 9-3. . The Eaglettes would like to thank Carol and Ken Irvine, our sponsors from the XL Gas Bar, for their very generous, and unex- pected monetary surprise. It was greatly appreciated. Legionaires lead series The Port Perry Legion Pee Wee A's have had strong goaltending and excellent team hustle to a 2-1 lead in their best of five playoff series with Cobourg, with the fourth game to go in Port on Mon- day night. Wednesday night, Port travell- ed to Cobourg and started things off on the right foot by beating the home team 5-2, giving them the important first game of the series. With only seven forwards, the Legionaries turned in an outstanding skating and checking effort to dominate play and come away with their first win of the year in Cobourg. After a scoreless first period, Chad Kearns put Port on the board, converting a goalmouth pass from Sean Ellis at 14:31 with Cobourg a man short. Joe Broad- worth also assisted on the play. Almost exactly a period later; at 14:33 of the third, Chad stole the puck in the corner, moved it to Joe on the end boards and Joe's pass found Dave Bourgeois in front of the net. Dave let the goalie go down, then parked it on the top shelf for a 2-0 lead. At 5:16 Dave was in front again, in position for Jeremy Norton to blast a point shot off the shaft of his stick into the net. Sean Ellis drew an assist on this power play goal. Cobourg finally got one by Steve Gilbert, but within 30 seconds Joe restored the 3 goal lead as he potted a nice goal on assists by Chad and Jeremy. Port picked up its only penalty of the game with 2:32 to play, and it only took Cobourg 30 seconds to make it a 4-2 game. As they pull- ed their goalie to press for a com- eback, Scott Heasman fired the puck around the boards where Sean cleared the zone and fed Chad who shifted by the defender and broke away for the tap into the empty net. Saturday night in Port the scor- ing started early for the first time in the playoffs. The Chad, Dave, and Joe line came out with heavy pressure off the opening faceoff and inside the first minute Dave pumped one in from the slot. Jeremy also played a big role in the goal. Cobourg tied the score before the period ended, but in the second Jeremy netted two, giving Port a 3-1 lead. The first was the result of a long, heavy shot that over- powered the goalie to trickle into the corner. Kenton LeFort, who played an outstanding game, drew an assist on the goal. The se- cond was scored after Chad won a faceoff to Jer, who made a nice play to move in for the kill. As the time wore down, Sean and Kenton broke away and perfectly executed a 2-on-1, Ken- ton firing the big goal. 14 seconds later, Craig Laird finished off a heads-up play with Scott and Jason Phillips to increase the lead to 5-1. Cobourg picked up a late power play marker at 1:26, but; with the goalie out Chad won a faceoff to Neil Mueller and Neil fired a long shot dead on target. Kenton was also credited with an assist. Once again, Port received strong netminding as Mike Pashley took his turn to block Cobourg's big shooters and allow the skaters to get on with the attack. Cobourg had their backs to the wall in game three, and played a tough, aggressive game. Port responded and the result was as Atom HL Tripp Realty 7 Lake Scugog Lumber 4 This was a fast paced game with each team showing lots of offence. Kristan and Tyler Wootton each scored once and assisted on 2 other for Lake Scugog while single goals went to Kevin Hill and Chris Jamieson. Aaron Levy chipped in with an assist to finish exciting, fast a game as anyone could ask for. Cobourg's game ap- peared to be to feed their big point men and it worked well, as a late first period goal and another halfway through the second gave them a 2-0 lead, despite some ex- cellent saves from Steve. Port came out of the break pumped up and in the first minute Chad fired a partially screened shot from above the circle to make the score close. Dave and Jay King had assists-on the goal. As the action flowed from end to enc-and time wore on, Cobourg broke in to score once more. Refusing to quit, Port continued to press and at 6:14 Dave fooled the goalie with a long, hard wrist shot to close the gap again, Scott and Chad drawing assists. Despite heavy pressure and some -good chances Port was unable to get the one they needed to send the game to O.T. and had to set- tle for a chance to win at home Monday night. results off the scoring.
