That's the opinion of Glenn Taylor, Central Seven's new ex- ecutive director, who took over the job on January 2 after James Duncan left to take a new position with the psychiat- ric hospital in Whitby. In an interview with the Star last week, Mr. Taylor said educating the public is a slow process, but large steps have been made since the 1960's when there was a shift away from institutionalization for the developmentally handicapped and into community-based work and residential settings. The Central Seven Associa- tion, based in Port Perry, pro- vides services for about 50 adults from Scugog, Brock and Uxbridge Townships. The Association recently of- ficially changed its name to in- clude "for Community Living," a reflection on the emphasis of this goal. Many are employed at the Central Seven workshop on Durham Road 8 in Port Perry, and the Association operates several residential homes and apartments in the Township. "Most of our people will al- ways need some kind of help," said Mr. Taylor, "but our chal- lenge is to deliver the help with- out systemizingit too much." Before taking over as exec- utive director with Central Sev- en, Mr. Taylor spent five years working with the Oshawa and District Association for Com- munity Living in programs for independent living. He was involved in similar work in Montreal before taking time out for a master's degree at Concordia University. He said his new job as exec- utive director will be a challeng- ing one, and he's looking for- ward to accepting those challenges. Central Seven, with nearly 70 full and part time employees, receives the lion's share of its operating budget from the pro- vincial government. PAT 985-8218 SEAGRAVE | || | INTERIORS Think Spring!
