- a 42 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 6, 1990 66 women attend Presbyterial workshop by Eileen Burgess "Weaving God's Community' was the theme of a one day workshop held January 17 at Kedron United Church. Each of the 66 women in attendance were given a small woven mat attach- ed to their name tag and many members brought personal ex- amples of weaving, such as mats, purses, scarves, and wall- hangings. Elsie Werry expressed greetings on behalf of Kedron U.C.W. and Jaqulin Guthrie, President of Oshawa Presbyterial U.C.W. welcomed those present and thanked the members of the executive who were responsible for planning the day. Jaqulin reminded everyone of some com- ing events: 1) February 13 at 12 noon, an op- portunity for all U.C.W. members to meet the Moderator of the United Church, The Right Reverend Sang-Chul Lee. Newcastle Church will be hosting the Moderator at 2 p.m. for all other members of Presbytery. 2) Oshawa Presbyterial U.C.W. Annual Meeting on March 7 at Trinity United in Bowmanville with guest speaker Judith Snow. 3) Bay of Quinte U.C.W. Con- ference at Campbellford on April 3, 4. Gloria Jackson outlined the ac- tivities for the day and then in- troduced Peggy Milliken who pro- vided some background on the terminology of weaving and how our lives can be compared to the warp weft. When our strands become loose we depend on God's guidance to keep us intact. A devotional period was con- ducted by Kathy Gundry, Joyce Taylor, and Joan Lane in which they shared readings about the woven clothes worn by Christ dur- ing His lifetime. 'The ladies were then divided in- to two groups and then divided in- to smaller groups each one representing a continent-Asia, Pitch-in week Schools, organizations and communities throughout the Pro- vince are encouraged to order free, especially imprinted gar- bage bags being made available by NOVA Corporation of Alberta to undertake clean-up, beautifica- Religion day celebrates different faiths On Sunday, January 21, World Religion Day was celebrated at the Anglican Church of the Ascen- sion in Port Perry. The programme included readings from the Jewish, Chris- tian, Bahaii, Muslim and Bud- dhist faiths. A presentation by Reverend Bull truly captured the spirit of unity which was the in- tent of the occasion and overflow- ed into animated conversation during refreshments afterwards. World Religion Day is held to call attention to the harmony of spiritual principles and the oneness of the world's religions and to emphasize that religion is the motivating force for world peace. We look forward to even greater participation in this event next year. tion and recycling projects during PITCH--IN WEEK which will take place May 7-13, 1990. "We're asking participants in this year's PITCH--IN Campaign to, if possible, separate the waste which they collect into recyclable and non-recyclable materials and place it in especially marked bags," states Charles Alexander, President of the Ontario Federa- tion of Anglers & Hunters. As a result of increased funding from NOVA Corporation, the number of garbage bags to be made available will increase and organizers are hopeful that some bags will be provided to every group requesting them. In 1989, a number of organizations did not receive bags due to overwhelming demand. "We urge everyone planning to participate in PITCH--IN WEEK to contact the organizers of the campaign as soon as possible with their request,"" coments Alexander. PITCH--IN WEEK is a pro- gram of the Ontario Federation of Anglers & Hunters in cooperation with PITCH--IN CANADA, the Ontario Ministry of Environment, NOVA Corporation and a number of local municipalities throughout Ontario. Organizations wishing further information on how they can obtain garbage bags should contact PITCH--IN ONTARIO, 500 - 6 Adelaide Street East, Toronto, Ontario, M5C 1HS. We are living in one of the most dramatic and exciting periods in all of humanity's history. The events happening in Eastern Europe are setting the stage for a politically united Earth. Hear the Baha'i ideas on how and when we will live in A MORE PEACEFUL UNITED WORLD A talk by .. BOB ABRAHAM political Scientist; Contributes articles to the Newmarket newspaper the "Era Banner", Teacher for York region; Member of Peace Groups - Canadian Peace Congress, and World Federalists FRIDAY, FEB. 9th at 8:00 PM At the home of: David & Sylvie Gardner, Scugog Island 1985-8396 Africa, Europe, and North America. Each group was to prepare a three minute presentation-song, skit, poem, choral recitation - about weaving and the women in the country represented. Following these presentations Vice-President Betty Turcott led in the singing of We'll Weave a Love. She gave a report of events and the importance of the Ecumenical Decade of Women of the World Council of Churches. After lunch Margaret-Ann Lamb introduced the afternoon speaker, Rev. David Spivey of ---- Campbellford, who was a former minister at St. Andrew's United in Oshawa and at Newcastle United. His informative tagk which stimulated thinking and discus- sion was about 'Excluding and Including People in our Chur- ches." He stressed the impor- tance of listening because "when we don't listen we increase the speaker's pain" and "people will turn away from our church if they are not being listened to." Rev. Spivey went on to say that if we listen to the signals of people we can stop 95 percent of the drop- outs from our church. A person's by PORT PERRY @M PRINCE ALBERT ? UNITED CHURCH Rev. D. Robert J. The Turtle retires into oneself, imposing self- guilt, while the Skunk is the one who reacts by a change in atten- dance, decrease in participation of activities, offers letter of resignation, and finally will withdraw financial support. He summed up by encouraging each one to listen to the clues given by unhappy church members and our ministers who also have needs and stresses. Rev. Spivey closed by saying we need to "give others the gift of time." THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN CANADA Rev. Stuart McEntyre, B.A., B.D. Office: 985-3881 -- Home: 985-3409 FEBRUARY 11, 1990 ST.
