Port's Pee Wee B's played their final round robin playoff game Friday night and were victorious against Bowmanville 7-3. They ended the playoffs with 4 wins, 1 loss and 1 tie. Radical! Bowmanville was on the board quickly, but 3 minutes later Jeremy Geer tied it up for Port on a great pass by Daryl Bourgeois. One minute later Bowmanville again went ahead. In the second period Matt Hobbs put it into the corner to tie it again on a pass from Ian Shrigley. Kent Taylor blistered a shot in for Port on a play set up by Jason Reid and Rick Olaisen. 44 seconds in the second, Bowmanville clos- ed the gap to 4-3. The third period was Port's, with 3 unanswered goals and some awesome saves by Scot Prechitko. Ian Shrigley started the scoring with less than a minute into the period on a play from Brett Lawson and Mike Labanovich. Brent Harper scored Port's 6th goal with an awesome shot. Assists to Ian McCready and Jeremy Geer. Jason Reid finish- ed the scoring with the assist to a hard working Jason Phillips. Unfortunately for Port, Peter- borough finished with 5 wins and 1 loss beating us out for advanc- ing to the second round. Our team showed how good hockey can be played and they deserve a lot of credit. The team was entered in the Campbellford tourney on Sunday and came home with the Cham- pionship medals in the B Division. Port's first game was against Bradford. Jason Reid got a good pass to Kent Taylor who popped it over a downed goalie and 2 minutes later Jason Phillips and Brent Harper teamed up té scored Port's second goal, giving Port a 2-0 lead. Port had complete control of this game until the last 6 minutes of the third when Bradford scored 2 quick goals sending us into over- time. With 1:01 gone, Bradford got a 3 on 1 breakaway and hand- ed Port its only loss of the day. A heart breaker to lose. Port's second game was a high scoring one against the team from Ennismore with Port coming out on top by a score of 11-3. The score after the first period was Port 4, Ennismore 3 a see- saw battle. Then Port went on a scoring binge. Every member of the team counted in the scoring depart- ment in this game - a feat not often accomplished by any team. Hats off to Matt Hobbs with a hat trick on goals and to Jason Phillips with 4 big assists and Ian Shrigley 3. A beautiful 3 way passing play by Daryl Bourgeois to Jeremy Geer to Brent Harper gave Port first notch in the belt. The team work of Kent Taylor and Brett Lawson notched another for Port. Jason Reid then scored his second unassisted goal of the day slipp- ing it into the side of the net. Sneeky little guy he is. Lakefield then scored their on- ly goal of the game??? Port came back with 3 unanswered goals to put the icing on the cake. Daryl Bourgeois and Jerem Geer got together for our fourt| goal. Ian McCready and Ian Shrigley did some fine passing to Sandy Mark who scored a short- handed goal. A waiting Rick Olaisen finished off the scoring as the result of some great stick work and passing by Jason Reid and Kent Taylor. Final score: Port 6 - Lakefield 1. MVP honours went to a well deserving Jeremy Geer. Way to go Jer - nice hair Sandy. With Port now eliminated from playoff action, they can now set their sights on tournaments - 5 to be exact. Their first is our own tournament Feb. 24. Come on down - don't miss it. No luck this time for Port Juniors Saturday Feb. 10, the Port Perry 1.G.A. Juniors travelled to Pickering to participate in their annual tournament. After their success in Ottawa, everyone was looking forward to another chance at gold. But as luck would have it, out team failed to produce the results that were expected of them and fell short of their goal. In the first game, played against the host team, Pickering, we were defeated by a score of 9-3. Playing our second game of the day we met a team from Caledonia and again were defeated, be a score of 8-3. In this game we lost the services of our goaltender, Kathy Napper who in- jured her back while attempting to make a save late in the game. In the third game against Lon- don, the team that played for gold in Ottawa, started to return as the passes became sharper and the goal-scoring touch returned. Although the final score was 10-6 for London, they showed some promise for the semi-finals. The format of the tournament was such that even though we were unable to gain a victory, we still were able to get into the semi- finals. In the semi-finals, we again met the host team from Pickering. The outcome of the game showed a return of some of our playing abilities as we forced the game to triple overtime before we were defeated 8-7. In this game, if not for the brilliant goaltending of Bristol Sleep and the defensive work of Jennifer Hunter, Laurie Thomp- son, Mandee Porter and Melanie Dunne, we could have been sound- ly defeated. Scoring over the weekend were Kendra McCrae 5 assist, 3 goals; Jennifer King 3 assists, 1 goal; Jennifer Hunter 3 assists; Val Payne 3 assists, 3 goals; Denna Lovering 3 assists, 10 goal; Danielle Lally 2 assists, 1 goal, JoAnn Zaal 2 assists, 1 goal; Melanie Dunne 2 assists and Kristin Armstrong 1 assist. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 13, 1990 -- 27 Pee Wee Bs enjoy strong playoff The arthual Luke's Country Store Ladies Bonsplel was held last week In Port Perry with a rink from Whitby Curling winning the trophy. Wayne Luke presented trophy to Helen Boyce, skip and her team members Janet Zinmerman, Gail Holmes and Lynda Reid. They had 30 points and were tied with Linda McLaughlin, but one on the tie breaker formula. Atom Bs record 4 and 3 The Pineridge Atom B's finish- ed their round robin playoffs with 4 wins, 3 losses and a tie. Monday, Feb. 5 in Darlington, Port came out with a 3-2 loss. Bowmanville scored the first one, but it wasn't long before the dynamic Mike, Danny and Derek line tied it up. This was another of Mike Morden's persistence in front of the net to keep working at the loose puck and it again paid off. Bowmanville came back with 2 more, but Port kept hustling and dominated the play. Another awesome line of Matt, Shane and Kevin Cochrane came through with Matt putting it past the goalie and closed the gap to 3-2. There were a lot of chances and action but both goalies stood tight. Friday night, in Port, again against Bowmanville, Port dominated the play. Although Paul made some, key saves, this game was Port's from beginning to almost the end. Halfway through the second, Matt Phillips made a beauty pass to Shane Norton. Shane was some impressive on this goal as he deked the defuse and blistered it past the goalie. The score stayed at 1-0 until 20 seconds left in the game when Bowmanville put the tying marker in. These guys travelled to Sutton on the weekend for tournament action. Their first game, Satur- day morning, against Whitby was fast and exciting. Port came out on top 5-3. Twenty seocnds into the game, Whitby popped it in. Mike Morden, ready for the loose puck, tied it up for Port. Assists to Danny Robinson and Robert Gracie. Whitby turned it on and scored the next 2 goals. Trevor Smith came out of his end and took a shot on net. Derek picked up the rebound for Port's second. There was no stopping Port now. Chris Drury took one of his amazing shots from defense that the goalie didn't see. Assist to Danny R.. Less than a minute later, Kevin Hobbs took the puck over the blucline and slid it to Jason Hopkins who scored Port's winn- ing goal. Mike Morden, on what is becoming his famous out in front shot, gave Port's insurance marker in the third. Matt Phillips set up the play to earn the assist on this one. They played their second game Sunday morning against Sutton. Port came out flying and with less than 2 minutes into the game. Kevin Cochrane scored a beautiful goal, nicely set up by Danny Robinson and Shane Nor- ton. Sutton tied it up minutes later. Chris Drury on his knees Novice League Van Camp 3 Davids 2 In the first game of the day, Van Camp Construction took on the second place Davids Hairstyl- ing team. Van Camp opened the scoring at 3:44 of the first period on an unassisted goal by Jonathan Froats. With 11 seconds left in the first period Greg Bruton scored assisted by Casey Brown and Jeff Ashton. The scoreboard read Van Camp 2, Davids 0. After a scoreless second period, Davids scored at 8:43 of the third period on a nice unassisted goal by Scott Sanderson. At the 8:27 mark (16 seconds) later, Davids' scored again on a goal by Tyler Wootton assisted by Joel Phoenix. This goal tied the score at 2 but with just 39 seconds left in the game Jeff Ashton scored assisted by Jonathon Froats to edge Davids by a final score of 3-2. Both goalies played a fine game, stopping the offence from point blank range, time and time again. - In goal for Davids passed to Matt Phillips and with 18 seconds left in the first, Port went ahead 2-1. It was Sutton's game after this as they scored 4 unanswered goals ending the game 5-2. Port gave it their best in their final game against the Uxbridge A team but dropped this one 4-0. MVP's in the three games were awarded to three outstanding and hand working players. Con- gratulations to Trevor Smith, Kevin Hobbs and Derek Leeming. Way to go guys! Honourable Mention tor a nice two way effort for Davids was Cris Orr and for Van Camp, Ben Stephenson. Port Perry Printing 1 Re/Max Realty 1 After the first game, being decided with just 39 seconds left in the game, the second game was no different with both teams com- ing out just flying. In this game, the goalies stole the show. Both goalies stoned the offence time and time again. After two period os scoreless hockey, P.P.P. opened the scor- ing from Scott Harper on a love- ly pass from Adam Mahaffy at the 9:37 mark of the third period. 33 seconds later, Re/Max Realty tied it up on an unassisted goal by David Gainey. This is the way the game end- ed as both goalies shut down the goal scorers for the remainder of the game. Playing goal for Port Perry printing was Tommy Kee- ble and Justin Sheehey played in goal for Re/Max Realty.
