Cubs and Beavers hold bake sale SCUGOG ISLAND NEWS BY MRS. EARL READER It seems as if we have a very in- teresting week ahead of us which started off with an instructive, thought provoking and entertain- ing period spent with the con- gregation of the Island United Church. We learned who the Elders & Stewards are and their duties before an Induction Service. The children also had this explained to them. The winter's beginning, though severe, seems to have moderated encouraging pussy willows to open but most seeds are locked away in winter's grip when they need a period of prolonged cold to germinate. This can be compared to our hard times of failure, separation and grief when we are being prepared for a time to grow, if we can trust it, to explore new directions. After service we noticed several men hurry away to the Community Hall to complete their plans for serving a brunch to the women and children. So many men became involved that the older ones were encouraged to sit down also at the tables covered with attractive brown and white gingham lunch cloths enhanced with fancy stitches, all matching the servers aprons. Eventually the tables were all filled. I must say we never had better service. 'I'hose men certainly haa been well trained somewhere and I'm sure they enjoyed getting ac- quainted and getting together. After a delicious brunch, it was time for families to go to the Port Perry Arena for an afternoon of skating. What a wonderful way for former members to get to know and welcome the new adherents! The children sure enjoyed it as well. Now, on Monday the Moderator of the United Church, Dr. Sang- Chul Lee, will meet the youth of the area, after school 5-9 p.m. at Seagrave United Church. Then on Tuesday there will be an open breakfast at the Port Perry United Church for everyone in the area to meet the Moderator. We've seen his pic- ture and read about his life. Now is our chance to see him and hopefully get a few words with him. On display there will be many items from the area United Churches showing history or work from the various departments. Wednesday we get a chance to rest from church functions. Maybe we can enjoy Valentine's Day and call on loved ones with a gift. Thursday, the women are off again to Manchester at 2 p.m. when women of Manchester & Scugog U.C.W.'s may have a joint session to meet Isobel Thrfault and listen to her experiences in Equador. I guess Friday will be spent with the women involved with Scugog Cubs and Beavers baking for the big bake sale on Saturday at the Island Hall at 10 a.m. to 12 noon. So if you want goodies for Sunday and don't want to drive to town, try to get to the hall. Mr. Joel Aldred will be there to con- duct the 50-50 draw. Wouldn't it be thrilling to hear your name call- ed out, if you have purchased a ticket. It might be interesting at this point to learn the names of the leaders. So here they are: Cubs - David Wood and Brad Allen, Beavers - Have 3 ladies - Anne Allen. Svlvia Wood & Diane Elliott. There is also a Group Committee of Jim Gerrow, Howard Wolf, Penny Kutlik and Brian Poirier. You see each list gets longer. However, 1 hear no one has sounded interested in the poor Boy Scouts yet. Come on, what can you do for boys of that age? It's a good thing the Women's Institute didn't try to get in this week. No - they have to wait for the 3rd Wed. next week Feb. 21, when Lilo Czilok is the convenor for a meeting of Education & cultural activities when the Roll Call will be "What do you do for entertainment."" The Motto is - '"'Good-bye-Winter Blahs." Therefore the program will be based on a "cultural excursion." We are getting near time for help at the Hospital Tuck Shop again. So members and friends of the "Head" U.C.W. will please consider the week of Feb. 25. Most interested people on the Island have renewed their subscriptions for '"The Observer" magazine, totalling 25 families. Just learned the Port Perry Arena was closed on Sunday and it seemed as if the Island Church skaters might be disappointed but it was a nice day so Nelson Reader offered to share his pond so 29 people enjoyed outdoor skating like they used to. Last Wed. a smaller number of ladies attended the "Head' U.C.W. at Helen Hortops as some were away. They approved a planned activity program for the year and changed a few customary dates. The roll call requested Feb. Blahs, but no one had any this year. "Thank you' messages were received from Lloyd Clark, the family of Mrs. Hazel Slemmon and the family of Mrs. Heather Reader. Another man has been en- couraged to join the Island United Church Choire, band more men are needed and especially base. But never mind if you don't sing base, there is a place waiting for you.
