rm en TT -- Yours In Education by Bobbie Drew ; Scugog Trustee Yoh 5 Durham Board of Education Money, Money, Money!!! We're all sick of hearing about , -- about how our taxes are rising federally, provincially and ocally. Quite frankly, School Trustees would rather be focuss- ing all our energies and attention to education topics and issues relating to curriculum, teaching and learning. Even Mr. Conway (Minister of Education) thinks we spend too much time worrying about education finance and tax issues. Meanwhile the Ministry of Education legislated in November, pooling of commercial and industrial assessment which in ef- fect will transfer millions of dollars from the Public Boards to the Separate Boards and we have no written guarantee we will be compensated for that loss. Other new costs imposed by governments that School Boards are struggling with are the Employer Health levy, in- creased UIC and Workmen's Compensation payments, im- plementing Pay Equity and Health & Safety. The Ministry of Education has legislated without adequate funding Jr. Kindergarten, Day Care Centres, etc. etc. etc. And Mr. Conway wonders why we're spending so much time worrying about finance. He's right! -- but we are all tax- payers too! Local tax time is very often the only time we focus on education and I'm hoping that through these periodic articles I can give you some insight into the issues we are dealing with and some of the good things that are happening in our system; things we can all really be proud of. Innovative programmes and ideas have been implemented for students at risk of drop- ping out and for apprenticeship training. Increased Outdoor Education facilities at Claremont have been beneficial to our students to make them environmentally aware & responsible. As the newly elected Chairperson of the Programme Com- mittee I was pleased to present a report on the Feb. 12th Board Meeting for the Committee to Review Self-Contained Special Education Classes - Associated and Developmental. In brief -the report recommends the placement based on the individual and unique needs of each student. Placement is decided on a by-case basis. We have not chosen one type of placement as a preferred approach for all special needs students. We recommend a variety of placements including: - -- mainstreaming with support -- self-contained Special Education classroom placement with integration -- regular classroom placements with reverse integration -- combinations of the above I see this policy as a positive step forward, meeting the demands of today's society while sticking to our principles of quality education for all our students. Also on Feb. 12th announcements were made about transfers of school administration. Next September the transfers that affect our area are: -- Elementary Vice-Principal Al Santell - from Cartwright Central to Beau Valley. Elementary Vice-Principal Marg Hildenbrand from Thorah Central to Cartwright Central. Elementary Vice-Principal Bryan Butler from Cedar- dale/Conant to Thorah Central.
