Port hosts LOSSA curling Port Perry High School hosted the LOSSA mixed curling championships on Thursday, and P.P.H.S. came away with a bronze medal. There were eight teams in- volved in this competition, three being from Port Perry High School. Port originally had one team entered, but due to the separate school strike, the tournament was two teams short, and Port Perry entered two more teams. Portl, met a team from O'Neill in their first match and lost the game to this tough squad, the Port2 team also lost their first match to a team from Dunbarton. This matched the two Port teams against each other, to determine which team would go on to the bronze medal match. The Portl team came away victorious in this match. The third Port team won its first match against Henry Street High School, to go on to play Eastdale Collegiate. The Eastdale team pulled out all the stops to knock Port3 out of the competition. The bronze medal match fea- tured Port against Uxbridge. This was a close match from be- ginning until end. The Ux- bridge team was up by one in the last end. Uxbridge removed one of the Port rocks in the final end, and it came down to the last rock b Uxbridge's skip. Skip's roc picked up the wrong handle, leaving Port sitting for two. This gave Port the 7-6 victory and the bronze medal match. In the gold medal match, the competition was just as close as long-time rivals O'Neill, and Eastdale were tied at 6-6 com- ing home. O'Neill won on the last rock claiming the gold, while East- dale settled for the silver. There is no DYSSA champi- onships for the mixed competi- tion this year, as York region did not hold the event this year. The Port team that captured the bronze medal in the LOSSA Mixed Championships consist- ed of Tania Fielding, skip, John Rankin, vice, Suzie Allin, sec- ond, and Kevin Martin, lead. Sportsland Bantams suffer 5-4 loss On Friday, Feb. 2, the Port Perry Sportsland Bantams travelled to Haliburton. This was an important game as the Port team had to beat Haliburton to stay alive in the round robin playoff series. Unfortunately the Sportsland team couldn't go the distance and lost 5-4. There was no scoring in the first period. Haliburton got on the scoreboard first in the second. Lindsay Parry was able to beat the defencemen, a minute later, and tucked the puck between the goalie's legs. Nice pass from Mike Sluggett. Haliburton scored a minute and a half later making the score 2-1. Port tied the game when Scott Wylie went in alone and scored, unassisted. Haliburton came out in the third and scored the next two goals. But that didn't stop Port. With 9:15 left on the clock Jeff Card scored from just inside the blue line. Assists went to Chad Gar- vock and Scott Wylie. Our next - goal went to Sean McEnaney, assisted by Chris MacCleod and Noah St. Amond. : With one minute to go, Port pulled Matt Willets from the net for an extra attacker. The team played hard but Haliburton was able to tuck a goal in with 1 second on the clock to defeat us. On Saturday, Feb. 17, Port travelled to Omemee to play in a tournament. Their first game was at 9:00 against Bowmanville. Aron Royle scored Port's first goal in the first period. Assists went to Jason Coutoulakis and Todd Smart. In the second period, Lindsay Parry scored with Steven Desautels assisting. The third and last goal was scored by Steven Desautels unassisted. The final score - Sportsland 3, Bowmanville 0. Matt Willets played well and deserved the shut-out. Port's next game on Saturday was at 1:00 against the Peter- borough St. James team. This was a fast paced game between two evenly matched teams. St. James scored first in the second period. Port came back to tie it when Scott Wylie was able to beat the goalie. Assists went to Steve Desautels and Jeff Card. St. James got the last goal of the game making the score 2-1 for St. James. This eliminated Port from the tournament. Adam Hayes made quite a few key saves between the pipes. Great game, Adam. XL Eaglettes win silver medals Entertainment Plus...describes the performance the Port Perry -XL Gas Bar Eaglettes gave their excited, boisterous fans February 17 and 18 in Oshawa's Harman Park Arena. In game one of the tournament 'Port met an eager team from Valley East, near Sudbury. Port's passing, shooting and ring control was too much for their opposition as the girls played for their first victory by a score of 10-1. The majority of these goals were scored "by the book"... tic- tac-toe passing from our defense of Norton, Shanley, Hiltz and Senyk to our offense through their defense and then to score. Amanda Wakeford was a scor- ing spark flipping 4 fast ones over the goalie's shoulders. Laura found the spot 3 times, Alechia twice and Jennifer E. once. Jen- nifer Hammond was put to the test in net and came up victorious. Later on Saturday, the Eaglet- tes took their defensive and offen- sive flare into the second game against Forest. Port dominated this game along the boards and in the corners as they usually came out in full control of the ring mak- ing it look so easy. Those prac- tices do pay off girls!!! The combination of good goaltending by Jennifer, hard working defense and unselfish Curlers advance A team representing Port Perry Curling Club has won the Zone b championship in Junior Mixed Curling and moves on to the Division final to be held the first weekend in March. Skip Jason Towns and his rink of Carrie Fielding, Kevin Watson and Leeanne Philip went through the A side with- out a defeat in the Zone play- downs held this past weekend at the Annandale Club. Janine, Alechia and Amand# each scored a pair and Jennifer E. had a single. This was definitely Laura's big game as she saturated Forest's net with 6 goals. Great game girls. The championship game against Oshawa was the one all players and fans from both teams had been waiting for. The Eaglet- tes had a taste in Ottawa -of frustrating this Oshawa team. From our first whistle the girls started with great momentum continuing throughout the game. Brooke managed to pull the ring out of a traffic jam, passed "to Laura who backhanded it into the net. Bonni-Jo, Brooke, Pam and Janna definietly had to plan their strategy to keep Oshawa's big scorers Wonnacott, Cybulski and Anderson away from our net- minder Jennifer and off the scoresheet. After "questionable" calls resulting in Brooke and Laura being penalized simultaneously, Janna single handedly maneuver the ring from Oshawa and shook off 3 players to move the ring up to our scoring zone. However, before they knew it, Oshawa snuck one past us to lead 2-1. Before the first period ended.Oshawa scored again but Jennifer E. passed to Janine who put a beautiful shot in the corner of the net to total the score 3-2. During previous games with Oshawa, the Eaglettes sometimes ran out of gas in the last half of the game but not this time. Along with the other "'red stick' team- mates, Pam and Bonni-Jo con- tinuously used their sticks, skates, bodies and strategy to keep the ring from our zone. Then Alechia caused great excitement when she scored fromf Bonni-Jo to tie it up 3-3. 3 minutes later Oshawa scored again and seconds following Alechia retaliated again to tie it up 4-4 with 6:12 left to play. The remaining minutes were filled with end to end action.
