On February 20, the Cartwright Central Concert Band competed against the Joseph Gould Senior Band from Uxbridge in the Grade Subloys SUBMARINE SUBMARINES & KAISERS OPEN 7 DAYS a WEEK LAKEVIEW PLAZA Corner Hwy. 7A & Water Street 985-7131 8 band class. Both bands played extremely well but Cartwright was awarded the Farmers Mutual Cup. The Cartwright High Wind Ensemble competed in the In- strumental Group B category, grade 9, 10, 11 players, on February 22, along with bands from Port Perry High School, Brock High, and Uxbridge Secon- dary School. The C.H.S. Wind Ensemble was very pleased to be awarded the Keith and Iva Rynard Cup, in this, their second year of performance. Both bands are conducted by Mr. J. Beirness. All band members and Mr. Beirness would like to thank the community for their support. In particular, C.H.S. Both bands beat their ri- vals at the Sunderland Music Festival, winning their categories for the first time ever. The Senior Wind Ensemble has also been invited to participate In Music Fest Canada in early May. This is the first year the band has ever competed in any competition. Local residents meet on Tuesdays Wasn't that a bone chilling weekend, but just to think that in about 3 weeks time, spring will have officially arrived, and we can look forward to a gradual warming trend, and just perhaps we might forget all about those cold, cold days of winter. - It was euchre night last Thurs- day night at the Community Cen- tre, with 13 tables. Ladies first prize went to Kay Brown, second prize to Mary Cannon. Low prize to Evelyn Dennis. Mens first to Joy Bright, second prize to Pete Gall, low prize to Jim Lynde. Lone hands to Jean Hodgins. On Tuesday, February 13, Muriel Fisher entertained the Ladies Bible Class. The meeting opened with the singing of 'I am Thine, O Lord." Scripture reading by Muriel. Meditation titled "Orderliness" was given by the president. Margaret Davis led in prayer. The hymn "More Love to Thee" was sung. Ruth Oliver gave us an interesting commentary on the first two chapters of the book "You Don't Have to be Perfect," written by Stephen A. Hayes. This book proves to be an interesting study book for future meetings. Ruth closed our meeting with prayer. Our hostess served us lovely refreshments, enjoying a nice visit together, even exchang- ing Valentines. The next meeting will be at the church on March 14. On Wednesday night of last week, Brooklin Horticultural Society met at Brooklin United Church. The speaker for the even- ing was Stephen Usher from Ashburn, speaking on the environ- ment, and will address the cur- rent concerns we are all faced with today. Congratulations to Pam and Randy at Ashburn General Store on the safe arrival of their infant son, Braden Lloyd, born on February 15. Roy and Norma Ingleton recently returned home following an enjoyable holiday in Puerto 'Vallarta. If you would like to visit with your friends, or meet new friends, you are welcome to drop in at the Community Centre every Tues- day morning from 9:30 - 12:00 noon, and take-a-break over a cup of coffee with friends. A nice way to meet with new people who are moving into our little town. The mums and tots meet every Thursday morning starting at 9;30 at the centre.
