Former farmer a Hall of Famer One of the leading pioneers in the development of the Hol- stein breed in Canada is to be inducted into the Ontario Agri- culture Hall of Fame Gallery this summer. The late Robert M. Holtby, who was born in Reach Town- ship in 1868 and died in 1944, spent nearly his entire career as a fieldman with the Holstein Association. His dedication and work were instrumental in develop- ing the Canadian Holstein, es- pecially for the export of breed- ing stock, to the point where today, the breed is known the world over and Canadian cattle have been exported to nearly 100 countries. The induction ceremony will be held June 3 at the Onta- rio Agricultural Museum in Milton, and the publicis invited to attend. Mr. Holtby's name was nominated by the Ontario branch of the Holstein-Friesian Association. He already is a member of the Canada Agriculture Hall of Fame (1962) and his portrait hangsin the gallery at the CNE. Born Christmas Day on the Reach 4th Concession (at the present Hanover Hill Farm to- day) Mr. Holtby was educated at Whitby H.S., and the Ontario College of Agriculture in Guelph. He joined the Holstein As- sociation in 1910 and in 1924 became a service fieldman. His main contribution over the next 20 years was in the pro- motion of listed herds, and the development of blood testing for brucellosis. He worked tirelessly to pro- mote the listing of disease-free herds, which in turn opened up lucrative export markets for Holstein stock to the United States. As his nephew Murray Holtby told the Star last week, the work he pioneered "helped pay off a lotof mortgages." During his career he be- came an expert judge of cattle, a man who could be trusted to judge honestly and without bias, and his services were in demand at cattle shows in Can- ada and the United States. He came up with the idea of honouring breeders with the Master Breeder award, and in 1938 was instrumental in orga- nizing the first Black and White Show at the Port Perry Fair, a show that remains an impor- tant part of rural fairs to this Single parent workshop In today's world many women find themselves either by choice or circumstance, the sole parent of their children. This role brings with it both advantages and disadvantages. The Family Education Resource Centre of Durham House is offering a workshop which will focus on the advan- tages to be gained by being part of a single parent family, as well as introducing skills to deal with the problems of task and emo- tional overload. The workshop cost is $8.00 (sub- sidies available where needed); it will be held from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28 at Can- nington Public School. For more information or to register, please call the Centre at 579-2021 or 686-4353. A day. He was known for his frank and forthright manner. In fact, the following is recorded as a bit of advice he once gave a young bachelor farmer: "Dehorn your cows, shoot your bull and get yourself a wife." With that, he Jumped in his car and drove away. During his career, he did al- most all his travelling by car, as much as 50,000 miles in a year. And he had a reputation for getting around in a hurry on the roads and highways. In 1941, he and his wife Ad- die celebrated their Golden Wedding and more than 600 friends gathered in Lindsay to to honour the couple at an anni- versary dinner. A devout church goer, he was known to drive through the night to get home in time for church Sunday marming, His work was his life, and on December 23, 1944, two days before his 76th birthday and a few weeks before he was to re- tire, he passed away. The late Samuel Farmer, author of On the Shores of Scu- gog, and a publisher of the Port Perry Star, wrote the following about Mr. Holtby on his passing "Men trusted Bob implicit- ly. They knew that he was hon- est not only as to money, but in his judgements of cattle. He could be neither bribed nor bul- lied. We who knew Robert Holt- by may well count it as a bless- ing that we had his friendship. We shall not forget him. It has been said 'A long life may not be good enough; but a good life is long enough." This is the 11th year the Ontario Museum has inducted prominent figures in agricul- ture into its Hall of Fame Gal- lery. On June 3, four others along with Mr. Holtby will bein- ducted. They are the late Annie Haggerty of Richmond; the late John McCague of Alliston; the late Frank Ryan of Claybank; and the late Frederick Stone of Guelph.
