Port Tweens give fine Provincials performance It has been said that *'close on- ly counts in horse-shoes," but dur- ing the Ontario Provincial AA Championships held last week in Etobicoke, it also counted in Ringette, as the Port Perry Pro- vincial A Tweens came ever so close in all their games, giving them some self-confidence, and making their parents very proud of them. Last week it was reported that the girls were forced by the On- tario Ringette Association, to compete in the AA Champion- ships rather than A, and they were also told that they had played at least two of these teams and beaten them. As it turned out, we had played their A teams and not the AA. On Thursday we met up with those two teams right off the bat. Sudbury, who are expected to be in the medal round, handed us a 7-1 loss with 4 of their goals being on powerplays. Later that day, we met Ottawa and had them 3-0, un- til the roof fell in and it ended 5-3. On Friday we finally saw some sunshine when we started off with Scarborough and tied them 7-7 and then met Kitchener and had a real barn burner which ended 2-0 for Kits. It was 1-0 after 1 period and only went 2-0 with 7 seconds left in the game. The girls narrowly missed several goals, and in a direct quote from the Kits coach, he stated 'I expected we would lose this one in the second period to you guys, you have an excellent team." - Saturday morning saw our on- ly blow-out, which we expected as we met the Gloucester AA team who are expected to win it all. Asst. coach Wayne Fox gave some well needed incentive, as he promised the girls $100.00 each if they won, and coach Lloyd Morden increased that by another $100 each. Some perspiration started to show when it was 1-1 half way through the first period and only 4-1 at the end, with Port girls ringing several off the post and the goalie catching about 4 loose rings right on the goal line. But Gloucester continued their domination and ended it 12-1, with 4 of their goals being scored when we were short-handed. At the end of the first, it was 4-3 for Port and the game ended 7-3. It should be noted that Kim Pop- pleton, Jennifer Morden, Michelle Fitzpatrick and Shannon Fox worked extra hard on defense throughout the tournament, and got their chances forward during this game. All of the other girls, filled in for them on defense and did a magnificent job. The big story that came out of the tournament was the outstan- ding goaltending of Tracey Pelow. Excluding the Gloucester game, Tracy had an average of 4.8 G.A.A. and probably stopped close to 175 shots from the best Tween sharp-shooters in Ontario. In a direct quote from coach Morden, "Tracy has had the best year of her career and has been the back-bone of our club." Goals and assists during the Championships went as follows: Megan Marlowe 5 goals, 2 assists; Tammy Pillman 1 goals, 2 assists; Karen Kett 1 goal, 3 assists; Amanda Webb 1 goal 2 assists; Shannon Fox 3 goals 2 assists; Jennifer Morden 3 assists; Amy Parliament 1 goal 2 assist, Michelle Fitzpatrick 2 goals 2 assists; Lyndsay Dutkewich 2 goals 2 assists, and Kim Poppleton 3 goals, 6 assists. Over 4 years, these girls have reached the All-Ontario Finals 3 times, been Ontario Champions once, won their league twice, won numerous Provincial tourn- maments, and have been in the finals on several more occasions. The coaching staff would like to wish them well in their future ringette endeavours or any other sports activity they choose to take up. Trailing the best of five se- ries two games to one, Port needed to win in Hespeler that night to force a deciding game back on home ice. In a see-saw match in which the lead changed hands several times, the end came at 5:06 of sudden death overtime when Hespeler's Mike Hack found the range to give his team a 4-3 win and a berth in the all- Ontario final series. This is the third straight season Hespeler Juveniles have advanced to the final round. Port Perry got goals from Gerry Douma and Mark Barkey with a pair. Port Perry had taken a 3-2 lead early in the third period, but Hespeler got the equalizer with just over six minutes to play, setting the stage for over- time. Coach Dave Barkey said later the loss was "very disap- pointing" for the team. He noted that three of the games were decided in OT, and he took a certain measure of sat- isfaction from the fact his club turned in a very credible playoff against a good hockey team, Games so close Game one was somewhat ot an upset as Crandell's squeezed past Norton's 3-2.
