- Penalties hurt MoJacks over the weekend MoJacks, Raiders even at two games each It's down to a best of three affair. Any thoughts Port Perry MoJack supporters might have entertained about a sweep in the Junior C quarter final se- ries against Napanee vanished into thin air over the weekend as the Raiders took a pair of wins to square the set at two games each. In a penalty-filled game Saturday night in Napanee, the Raiders scored three times on the power play en route to a 5-4 win over Port Perry. And Sunday night back in Port Perry, they seemed to be half a step ahead of the Mo- Jacks all game, and turned it into a 5-3 win. This was certainly a differ- ent Napanee squad than the one that showed up for the first two games of the series, both of which MoJacks won by scores of 7-4 and 12-2. In Sunday's match at the Scugog Arena, the Raiders seemed to set the tempo right from the opening face-off, checking the MoJacks at every turn while taking advantage of their scoring chances. Darren Lee gave MoJacks a short-lived 1-0 lead early in the first as he re-directed a shot on the power play. Len Giacalone and John Lally drew the as- sists. But the Raiders tied things up two minutes later on the power play with Randy Holmes finding a corner behind Tony Sortino. Raiders went ahead 3-1 by the mid-point of the second on goals by Aaron Uens and Holmes, before Kevin Gibson took advantage of two penalties to the Raiders to score off a wild scramble at 18:41. Shane Hoskin, easily the . most skilled member of the Raiders, upped the margin to 4- 2at 14:100n a two on one break. Dave Burnett made it in- teresting with 15 seconds left when he worked clear for a back-hand, but Hoskin drove the final nail into the MoJacks with an empty netter with two seconds to play. This was a tight-checking game from start to finish with 8 © s Ril b-3 F r td It's not quite back to square one for the Port Perry Mo- Jacks, but aimost. Leading Napanee two games to none go- ing into last weekend's Junior C playoff action, MoJacks came out on the short end of both games and the best of neither team having a great number of decent scoring chanc- es. And un-like Saturday's game, the teams decided to stick to hockey with just nine minors to ModJacks and ten to the visitors. In Saturday's game, the ModJacks found themselves trailing 4-1 in the third before they staged a rally to tie things up on goals by Kevin Gibson, Rob Willetts and Jim Vernon. Brad Menzies had clicked for the other MoJack marker early in the game. Novice ringette team It was a very determined group of Port Perry Novice Ringette girls that arrived at the Harman Park Arena on Sunday afternoon as they prepared to play the final playoff game of the season. The opposing Oshawa team has been the X.L. Eaglettes toughest all important game, however, the Port Perry girls put all of their skills and strategies to the test and came away with a 4-3 victory. Our goalie, Jennifer Hammond, "wowed the crowd" by making numerous spectacular saves; but she did not have to face the onslaught of shots alone. The competition this year. During this Shanley and Bonni-Jo Norton as well as Janna Senyk and Pam Hiltz were ready for any action that came into their zone. Down at the opposite end of the ice a steady stream of shots was being made on the Oshawa goalie by our outstanding offensive players of Jenny Lane, Jennifer Elliot, Amanda Wakeford and Diane Vanderligt. Being cheered on by fellow teammates, Jennifer Donnelly and Melissa Hooker, the first goal of the game was scored by Alechia Cracknell from Janine Hammond, with the second goal being scored a short 37 seconds "seven affair Is now locked at two games each. MoJacks But Uens gave the Raiders the 5-4 win when he connected at 17:25. Penalties hurt the Mo- Jacks in both weekend games, and the MoJacks also had trou- ble capitalizing when they had the man advantage. Saturday's game featured several scraps and over 100 minutes in penalties. SLAPSHOTS: If there's such a thing as momentum, it may have shifted to the Raiders fa- vour. The series moves back to Napanee this Saturday night for game five at 8:15, and the teams will meet in game six XL Eaglettes win championship by Janna Senyk. At the end of the first period, the score was 3-0 in favour of the Eaglettes with the third goal being scored, once again, by Alechia from Janine. The second half, though, was nothing short of a nailbiter as the Oshawa team scored 3 goals of their own; but not before Laura Hooker scored another big one . In spite of the majority of the penalties being sent the way of the Port Perry team, the girls prov- ed once and for all, before an ecstatic crowd of family, friends and coaching staff, that they are indeed the champs! We all wish them luck in the upcoming dynamic defensive duos of Brooke later by Laura Hooker, assisted Regionals. didn't have a lot of decent scoring chances in Sunday's game at the Scugog Arena, although Todd Taylor (16) and Jim Vernon (17) came close on this play. Since the playoffs began for the MoJacks, the team has had trouble after winning by a big "blow-out" margin. Against Uxbridge, after winning 8-2, the MoJacks lost the next two games. After crushing Bowman- ville 11-1, they lost the next two. And after blanking Eagles 9-0, they lost the next one on home ice 4-2. Same pattern has emerged in this series, They thrashed Napanee 12-2 on March 18, them promptly dropped the next two games. Swim club members to splash for cash Members of the Uxbridge Swim Club are getting ready for "Swimathon" on Sunday April 1, 1990. This Province-wide event is swum by every member of an On- tario Swim Club. Members of U.S.C. have been busy getting pledges for their 200 laps. A sponsor may pledge any amount per lap, that the swim- mer can complete in 2 hours. Swimmers swim a maximum of 200 laps. Over the last three years our members have raised greater and greater pledges to help sponsor the club in competitions at every level. Most of the money raised stays right with our local club with only a minimal registration going to the provincial body. Any sponsorship of $10.00 and over is eligible for an income tax receipt. If you would like to spon- sor a swimmer contact any swim member or Nancy Hannah for further details. This year our swimmers are be- ing strongly motivated by local merchants donated prizes. The Sound Shop has provided two radios, Uxbridge Canadian Tire donated a $50.00 gift certificate and several other local businesses are working our prize details with club officials. Our swimmers ap- preciate the local business sup- port. Swimmers invite the curious or any interested people to watch the swim-a-thon on Sunday April 1 at Uxpool from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
