Trustee admits present facilities far to small ---- a SP TN TY PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 27, 1990 -- 3 Wants to know cost of building to taxpayers Scugog trustee Joyce Kelly wants to see "all the facts and all the numbers" before she makes up her mind on a propo- sal for a new administrative building for the Durham School Board. She made the comment fol- lowing published reports last week quotin, chairman Ian Brown that the Board could be re-locating to a new building in Whitby as early as 1995 at a co- stof about $28 million. While agreeing that the Board's present administrative building on Rossland Road in Oshawa is "far too small and over-crowded," Mrs. Kelly said plans to move are still "very much in the future." And she stressed that she wants to know exactly what it might cost tax-payers before she decides whether or not to throw her support behind the proposal. If and when a new building gets off the ground, the cost will come from property tax reve- nues and/or debentures as the provincial government does not provide grant money for admin- istrative facilities. Mrs. Kelly said that one major consideration in her mind is whether the Board can sell the building and land it now occupies on Rossland and for what price. Over the past couple of years, the Board has been quiet- ly looking at potential sites in Oshawa and Whitby for a new administrative building. When asked if any consid- eration had been given to a joint venture with Durham Region (which is now in the process of a two building proposal at a cost of $52 million) Mrs. Kelly re- plied that meetings between Board and Regional officials on thisidea "went nowhere." On the surface, she added, it (putting the Region and QUALITY FILM PROCESSING in one hour RJM Quality Prints 60 WATER ST., PORT PERRY 985-8821 INSTANT PASSPORTS COMPARE THE RATE! 165 QUEEN ST., PORT PERRY 985-8435 School Board under one roof) looks like a good idea, but there would be just too many prob- lems, she said. Board chairman Ian Brown is quoted as saying the site un- der consideration for a new building is located on Taunton Road between Anderson and Garden Streets. - open - Monday to Friday 9:30 10 9:30 Saturday The Board presently owns six acres ofland there, has an of- fer on 14 more (owned now by the Archdiosese of Toronto) and an option on a further six acres owned by Graywood Develop- ments. If this land can be assem- bled, the Board wants to build a new high school (cost $28 mil- 5 POINTS MALL Saturday, March 31st lion) before moving ahead with the plans for the administrative building on the same site. The Board's current build- ing on Rossland Road is 30 years old, and was built for about 100 employees. Current- ly, the Durham Board has five times that many people work- ing in adminstration, and some SPRING HOME SHOW Wednesday, March 28th through to are in rented office space in Whitby now. The Board estimates that a new building would be some 150,000 square feet. It is expected that full de- tails on the proposed new building will be put in front of the trustees and the public. this all. LANDAWN SHOPPING CENTRES
