12 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, April 10, 1990 or nr Must preserve this planet of ours To the Editor: We, the people of the world think that we're so superior to the rest of the members in the animal kingdom, only because we are so smart. But are we? Being National Wildlife Week I'd like to make everyone aware of the fact many of man's inven- tions are based upon the same principals as nature's. In fact, nature thought of it first. Reproduction depends on creatures being able to attract the opposit sex and one method employed is the use of perfumes. Dogs, rabbits, foxes and deer all have strong smelling scents which attract the opposite sex. People use a variety of manufac- Taxes are To the Editor: As a member of 'Citizens Against Unjustified Taxes," I strongly object against the 14.8 percent increase in municipal taxes last year. I am a senior citizen (73), have worked a long life to retire in "Pine Haven," Blackstock, and the amount of taxes I have to pay, will force me to sell my property. I wonder if this is the secret reason behind raising taxes? I have been in Canada since 1952. I have served this country by going into great expenses to bring up my daughter Christilot Hanson Boylen to be a champion Olympic Dressage Rider. We have brought Canada from the last to the third place in the world. Although the proposed new tured scents to make themselves more attractive. The modern day glider was perfected after man studied the flight patterns of broad-winged birds like the eagle, vulture and the albatross. Man straps snowshoes on his feet so he can travel across the snow in the winter time. Showshoe rabbits and lynx grow their own. Mobile homes, armor, camouflage, snorkels and dams, to mention just a few more are on- ly some of the inventions that were borrowed from nature. The list goes on and on. So let's stop and ponder about what we are doing to the environ- too high!! sports and recreation complex, to be built in Port Perry, is a lofty idea, it should not be done at the expense of citizens like myself. No one helped me when I helped my daughter to reach her goal for the honour of Canada. I hope this letter will make the Scugog Township Council see the other side of the story, and give them really constructive ideas to raise the money needed, by ar- ranging fairs, or matches of foot- ball, baseball, etc.. People who support the Coun- cil's ideas could then actively par- ticipate in realizing their vision without harming their fellow citizens. We should preserve what's left of this beautiful world and the creatures that live on it. We owe them at least this much after all they've done for us. By Lisa Pereman Gr. 8 student R.H. Cornish School Port Perry No Maple Sugar Festival to be held at Prentice Farm For almost two decades, the maple sugar festival had been something of a local tradi- tion at the Prentice farm on Scugog Island. But not this year. Everett Prentice said there are a couple of reasons why the festival was cancelled. He had some health prob- lems over the winter. "There's so much work involved with get- ting things ready (for the festi- val) we just decided to let it go by this year," he told the Star. And with the festival held the last Sunday in March and first in April, it's tough to get good weather this time of year. If it's raining or looks like rain those days, people may not want to get out. As for next year, he said maybe. Could it happend again? Then last Saturday morning, as Nancy and | were sitting at the kitchen table having a cup of our morning eye-opener, the phone rang. Olive Cox, who was cleaning the dental offic- es across from the Star phoned to tell me thick black smoke was pouring out of the chimney at the Star office. | thanked her for calling, hung up and rushed out of the door heading for the office. Thoughts raced through my mind, with the first to get my mother out of the upper floor apartment if it was indeed a fire. Then my thoughts ran to what should | try and salvage. But before | could answer myself | saw the thick black smoke as | drove into the parking lot at the rear of the Star. | quickly checked inside the building for sign of fire, and finding none went to the furnace room. Still no sign of smoke, so once again | went outside to check the chimney. Black smoke still rose into the sky. ] Feeling there was not an immediate emergency, | then called long time friend, and Port Perry Fire Department cap- tain Bill Harrison and explained the situation. It wasn't long be- fore Bill arrived and surveyed the situation. To make a long story shorter, we called in a chimney sweep later in the day as the chimney had not been cleaned in years. A special thanks to Olive Cox, who didn't want to bother me, but said she couldn't live with herself if something terrible happened. And also a thanks to Bill Harrison for taking the in- terest and time to come and verify what | suspected. It's incidents like these that make living in a small com- munity more than worthwhile.
