JANE POULSEN DONNA MARCKULIS MAUREEN SALKELD Fitness, beauty & self confidence focus of business women meeting It may have been cold and blustery outside Thursday night, but inside Emiel's Place Restaurant about 65 local wom- en were tuning up for spring. Scugog Women in Business hosted Spring Tune-up, a dis- cussion on physical and mental health, and beauty and fashion pointers. Three experts, including Jane Poulsen of Jane's Face Fashions and Colors, Donna Marckulis of Splashdance Stu- dios, and Maureen Salkeld of Port Perry Counselling Servic- es, spoke on getting revitalized for spring. "Having your colors done is the best money you can ever spend," Ms. Poulsen said. The color concept includes finding out what color scheme of clothing would look best with an individual's skin tone and hair color. The schemes are di- vided into four categories: spring, summer, autumn and winter. "How can having your colors done help you?" Ms. Poulsen questioned. "They make you an educated consumer." "It takes the guess work out of buying clothes (and accesso- ries)," she said. But designers often dictate what colors are in fashion, al- ienating individuals who don't fit into that color scheme, Ms. Poulsen said. "Ninety per cent of the clothes for sale this season are autumn (colors), yet only 10 per cent of all people are autumns," she explained. Individuals often fall into the trap of purchasing a trendy col- or, then must buy new accesso- ries and make-up to match, but "they still aren't going to look goodin them," she said. o For individuals who enjoy wearing black and white cloth- ing, Ms. Poulsen had some good and bad news. The good news is that black and white will never go out of fashion, so people who are suit- ed to the winter color scheme "won't go naked," she joked. But not everyone should wear black, she warned. "I was always told that black was slimming but I look five years older in black," Ms. Poul- sen said. "If you insist on wearing black and aren't a winter per- son, wear it on the bottom half of the body. Keep it away from the face." Summer and winter people also have an advantage when it comes to hair. They can afford togo gray, she said. Ms. Poulsen has operated Jane's Face Fashions and Col- ors in Oshawa since 1978. A friend was setting up a salon and Ms. Poulsen rented half the office space from her. Within nine months, the clientelle had grown so large, they had to move to a new premises on Division Street. A color analysis at the salon takes approximately one-and- . a-halfhours and costs $90. ; But as the name of her salon implies, there is more involved that just colors. Ms. Poulsen offers a wide va- riety of beauty builders, includ- ing aspa day. For $120 the client enjoys re- _laxing in a whirlpool bath, gets a massage, facial, pedicure, manicure and make-up appli- cation. A light lunch, including wine, is also served. Other services available at Jane's Face Fashions and Col- ors include electrolysis, leg and bikini line waxing, eyelash and eyebrow tinting, and make-up (Turn to page 21) During you use for showering. the hot water you'll save.
