"Exercising makes you think clearer and act faster," Ms. Marckulis said. "You are more alert and your metabolismisin- creased by exercising." A good exercise program in- volves cardiovascular activity at least three times a week, she said. But a good warm-up is essen- tial, Ms. Marckulis said, adding that a warm-up often reduces the risk of injury. Once into an exercise rou- tine, she cautions participants to go at their own pace. Again, this will reduce the risk of inju- ry or becoming discouraged. "Walkingis a great exercise if done three to four times a week for 30 minutes to an hour," Ms. Marckulis said. "Brisk walking is a great cardiovascular exer- cise, but jogging is the best if you don't have any knee prob- ems. She also had some depress- ing statistics for the ladies present. "The older we get the harder it is to keep those pounds off," she said. Medical experts "say we gain one pound every year after the age of 25. "I don't mean to depress eve- ryone," Ms. Marckulis said. "I know we just ate. I had butter on my bread too." So how can individuals fight the battle of the bulge? "Diets don't exist," she pro- claimed. "There is no such word -as diet." Instead, what Ms. Marckulis guggests is a good overall fit- "ness program and good overall eating habits. Ms. Marckulis is opening a health club called Splashdance Studio on Water Street this month. She has worked in the busi- Numerous accidents last week keep Police busy Durham Regional Police working out of 26 Division re- sponded to numerous accidents this week. In the final segment of Spring Tune-Up, counsellor Maureen Salkeld spoke on how to rebuild the confidence we are born with. She asked the women present to shout out qualities of a child. Responses included in- nocent, fearless, demanding, responsive, creative, loving honest, curious and humour- ous. "Are you all of these things right now?" Ms. Salkeld asked. A resounding "No" eminated from the crowd. Ms. Salkeld said people begin to lose that original identity be- cause they become mirrors of their parents or early caregiv- ers. "We begin not to use these qualities because we are pun- ished," she said, adding that children are told not to touch, yell, try, worry, cry, etc. "We collect these messages and they become like an invisi- ble parent in our head." Ms. Salkeld then asked the women to shout out different emotions. Among the list was joy, an- ger, self pity, frustration, inad- equacy, hatred, pride, humilia- Mr. Frijio and Miss Morrison received minor injuries as a re- sult of the accident. Fifteen minutes later, police responded to an accident on Durham Road 23 north of Dur- ham Road 21. Faith Neuman, 26, of Whitby was northbound on Durham Road 23 when she went out of control on snowy roads and struck a vehicle driven by Cal- vin Avison, 26, of Whitby. Both drivers received minor jilfiries. No charges have been aid. tion, lust, hysteria, and irritability. She then asked which of the listed emotions are women not allowed to show. Soon mast of the list was deleted, but the women had come to one agree- ment -- it's alright for men to ex- press anger and sexual feel- ings. "We begin to live other peo- ple's reality and eventually we don't know how to be ourselves anymore," she explained. "How can we change this and get back the confidence we (were born with)?" Ms. Salkeld asked. To answer her own question, she quoted from Shakespeare. "The fault is not in our stars, butin ourselves." She recommends lowering expectations people have of themselves and of others, stop trying to please parents, stop fixing other people's problems and most of all, be willing to love and respect oneself for who oneis. The next Scugog Women in Business meeting will be June 6 at Greystone Equestrian Cen- tre on Shirley Road. The topic that night will be aging.
