At 5:25 of the first period, Van Camp scored again on a goal by Greg Bruton assisted by Steve Nagy. At 4:48 Davids rallied to score on a Tyler Wootton goal assisted by Ryan McQuade to close the gap to 2-1 for Van Camp after one period of play. The score remained the same until the mid- way mark of the second period when Van Camps' Jeff Ashton scored from a good feed pass by Jamie Clarke. At 2:43 of the second, Greg Bruton scored an unassisted goal to pull his team ahead by a score of 4-1. There wasn't anymore scoring in the second period, due to the quality of the goaltending by both goalies at both ends of the rink. This game was a long way from a cake-walk as both teams kept up their end to end rushes and they kept "pounding" the goalies at every turn. Atom 1s clinch national championship The Malmont Farms Atom 1 feam wound up the season by bringing home to Port Perry the Atom, National Championship trophy and banner from the Pep- si Invitational Tournament in Buffalo New York, held over the March 30 - April 1 weekend. The Green Machine was really up for this tournament and it showed in the boys' enthusiasm and determination. Combined with strong individual efforts was solid team play and 'heads-up' hockey skills. The boys put it all together over the three days of ac- tion, and, as the pressure increas- Malmont's first game on Fri- day was against the Hamburg Hawks. Although this wasn't the strongest team Port would face over the weekend, as it turned out, they were the only team to present any real threat. Port Perry counted the only goals after 2 periods of play, with one being scored in each of the first and se- cond. Early in the third, the Hawks came back and tied it up. When Port took two concurrent penalties in the third, it looked like the Halks had us against the ropes. Were it not for the stellar play of goalie Jamie Reid, it game. Port managed to serve out the penalties and when back at full strength, Jeff Clarke put Port Perry back in the lead with only 2:11 left in the game. Just before the one minute warning, the Hawks pulled their goalie for the extra attacker and put on enor- mous pressure in the dying seconds. Jamie however, was unyielding and deservedly receiv- ed the MVP award in the 3-2 final score. Malmont's scoring in the first period came from Tim Fitz- ed, so too dig their intensity. would have been all over for this patrick from Daryl McEnaney ] @ IGA Junior ringette team win silver at regionals Port Perry 1.G.A Juniors have finally finished their 1989-90 season. These young ladies travelled to the arenas of Oakwood, Ops and Little Britain to play in the Central Region Regional Championship tourna- ment. They were rewarded with the Silver medal for their efforts after a very long weekend of play- ing ringette. We started play Friday after- noon when we met our counter- parts from Mariposa and defeated them by a score of 7-5. The team then returned at 6 p.m, to face Pickering, whom we had met at the Pickering tournament and were defeated by them then in double overtime to be knocked out of the medal round. We avenged this loss by defeating them 9-5. Our third game was played against Warkworth on Saturday after- noon and we were defeated by a score of 9 to 5. Even though we lost this game we finished first in our pool, which meant we had made it to the medal round. In the first game of the semi- final we met Mariposa again. Over the season these two teams . have been very even and this game showed it. It went to triple over-time before Port Perry emerged victorious with a score of 6 to 5. This victory put us in the gold medal game. In the gold medal game, Port Perry fully expected to meet the team from Warkworth, but what they found waiting for them was the Sunderland team who had defeated Warkworth handily to knock them out of contention. After winning against Warkworth, Sunderland was a fired up team and this showed as they defeated Port to win the gold by a score of 8 to 7. They fully deserved this win. Scoring over the weekend were Jennifer King 8 assists, 4 goals; Danielle Lally 7 assists, 2 goals; Jennifer Hunter 5 assists; Denna Lovering 5 assists, 10 goals; JoAnn Zaal 4 assists 1 goal; Val Payne 4 assists, 7 goals; Kris Armstrong 4 assists, 7 goals; Ken- dra McCrae 3 assists; 2 goals; Mandee Porter 2 assists; Melanie Dunne 1 assist. The coaching staff would like to congratulate Bristol Sleep on her performance in goal this weekend to help win the silver and special mention to Laurie Thompson for her excellent work on defense when called upon. This is almost the end of another Ringette season. We on- ly have our annual Ringette ban- quet which will be held on April 21 at Latcham centre at 5 p.m.. We hope to see all of our ringette players there. Tim Fitzpatrick opened the scor- ing just before the midpoint of the first period. Before the period ended though, Kevin Gray con- nected with three in a row. Things tamed down a bit in the second, with the teams exchanging goals and splitting the single point awarded to the winner of each period. The point for the third period went to Port as they rang up their 6th. and final goal of the game. Darryl Holtby played solidly in goal and even saved the one marker that was counted against him. Unfortunately the momen- tum from the shot moved him back beyond the goal line. Tim Fitzpatrick's 1st period goal came with the help of Daryl McEnaney and Jason Logan; assisting on Kevin Gray's three goals was Ken Johnston and Tom Chambers on the first; Todd Parry and Jason Logan on the se- cond; and, Brad Morton and Tom Chambers on the third. Kent Johnston scored the second period goal knocking in Jeff Clark's rebound. Third period scoring was by Tom Chambers assisted by Brad Morton and Brad Shanley. The games MVP award went to Kevin Gray. As the scheduling turned out, it ~was Malmont's third game, against Neighbouring Pickering, that would decide which team would be division champion and who would earn the right to move on to the overall championship final. All indicators had Pickering as the favourite. In the period-by-period scoring, Pickering had earned the max- imum number of points, 1%. more than the Malmont squad. In order to move on to the final, Port had to win at least 2 of the 3 period, - and win the game. From the opening face-off, the Malmont team was flying and never let up. From the opening face-off, Jeff Clarke took a loose puck, swooped in behind Picker- ing's net and then scopped it in. The game was 39 seconds old. However, before the first minute of play was up, Pickering tied the score. The rest of the first period was fast and furious with both teams having equal opportunity. Tim Fitzpatrick finally put Port out in front with a goal at the 2:30 mark with an assist going to Jeff Clarke. Less than a minute later, Brad Shanley netted . Darly McEnaney's centering pass to break the game open. Tim Fitz- patrick scored the only 2nd period goal from Kent Johnston. Port carried their 4-1 lead into the third period and then secured the win by scoring two more before the game ended. Jeff Clarke figured in both these goal, scoring one and assisting on Tim's third of the game. Jason Logan set Jeff up on his goal. Both Darryl Holtby and Jamie Reid shared goal k duties and although not overworked, made some key savés. honours in this game went to Jéff Clardk.
