(From page 1) see 80 much enthusiasm and support for the proposal, they warned that such a project is a major one that ei need a lot of work and money. "lI admire all the enthu- siasm I see here tonight," said councillor Yvonne Christie, adding that a five year timeta- ble would be optimistic. Ward 4 rep Glen Malcolm also said any project could be five years away. But he pledged support for the idea. "Blackstock has enjoyed its Police extend search for Julie Stanton into rural areas Durham Regional Police are continuing the search for Julie Stanton. On the morning of April 23rd, 1990, the Ontario Provincial Police Helicopter was again used conducting an aerial search over an expanding area. Police of- ficers on trail bikes were also us- ed for a ground search. Police are asking for the co- operation of rural property owners to check for any signs of this missing person. Anyone with any information is asked to call. The phone number in the Pickering area is 683-9100 and ask for the Detective Sergeant at Headquarters or Crime Stoppers at 436-8477 (long distance call collect). arena for years, and it would be ashame to take that away. Let's keep this idea going, but please, be patient," he said. Ward 2 councillor Marilyn Pearce told the meeting that any community project over $50,000 must be the subject of a feasibility study in order to qualify for provincial grants. And these feasibility stud- ies can cost up to $30,000. When asked directly just how much money the Township might be prepared to pay to fix the existing building if inspec- tions in May turn up serious problems, Mayor Howard Hall said "we (council) will keep the building open as long as it's practical." In presenting the proposal to council, Mrs. Ingram said a cost of up to $2 million for a new building. But John Goss said later in the meeting that new arenas cost anywhere from $3.4 to $3.9 million. He's president of the arena board in Blackstock. The present Blackstock Arena was constructed in 1931 as a curling rink. The ice surface is not regu- lation size for OMHA hockey or figure skating under provincial regulations. And it's even a few feet short of today's regulation curling sheets. Two years ago, the arena lobby was totally renovated and connected to the adjoining com- munity centre. New washroom and dressing rooms were in- stalled. The show of support for construction of a new facility comes just before Scugog coun- cil will be presented with the findings of a Township-wide recreation needs study. Included in that study is a feasibility report on the issue of a second pad of ice for the Scu- gog Arena in Port Perry, along with other facilities like an in- door pool, fitness centre and banquet hall. Durham Road 2 will be re- named Simcoe Street from the Oshawa-Scugog border to the Scugog-Brock border. The busy thoroughfare cur- rently has several names in Scugog Township, including the Oshawa Road, Ontario Street, Lilla Street, and the Seagrave Road. And the street now called Simcoe which runs from the Picture Ridges north through Prince Al- bert will be officially changed to Old Scugog Road. Numerous roads and streets in Scugog are getting new names so that all residenc- es and businesses can be as- signed a number to fit the 911 enhanced emergency dial sys- tem.
