Every spring the largest of all fish in Scugog leave the south end of the lake and mi- grate into the Osler Marsh to spawn. ~ And every spring the Min- istry of Natural Resources sets up a netting program to find out more data about the Scugog muskies. For the past few weeks, MNR technicians have been working in the marsh, just south of the causeway at Port Perry, netting the muskies, tag- ging them, measuring weight and length, and taking a small scale sample before releasing them un-harmed back into the chilly waters. It's been cold work for much of the spring for Jeff Wilt- shire and Barrie Wilson. The weather has been terri- ble and the cold water tempera- ture has delayed the spawning run. ova. But things began to change that morning as the technicians found about a dozen muskie in the hoop net, along with numer- ous carp and other smaller spe- cies as well. The muskie in Lake Scugog grow to a large size (up to 40 pounds) but the largest ever netted in this program tipped the scale at 32.56 pounds. Fish well over 20 pounds are common-place. Handling these large, pow- erful predators who are armed with razor-sharp rows of teeth, recquires a lot of care. Once taken from the hoop net, the fish are placed in a hold- ing pen. Just before they are tagged and measured, they are immersed briefly in water with an anestheticsolutioninit. This leaves the fish docile and allows the technicians to carry out their work without danger of hurting the fish. Small yellow tags are placed just in front of the dorsal fin, and the fish are also inject- "+4 ed with liquimycin which acts as a deterrent against disease. It also puts a mark on bones and scales which can be "seen" under ultra-violet light as a method of measuring growth. And this year for the first time, all the muskie are photo- graphed by the technicians. . Once the work has been completed on the fish, they are gently released back into the water. Tests have shown that this kind of handling causes the fish no harm, but they tend to re- main dormant for a period of about 24 hours. If past years are any indica- tion, the technicians will net be- tween 126 and 130 muskie be- fore the program ends in another week or so, the majori- ty of them female. Though not the only spawning area for Scugog mus- kie, the Osler marsh is one of § themostimportant. Don't waste this space. Small ads pay!
