| | A Most Impressive Evening The Official opening of the S.A. (Sam) Cawker Public School, Thursday evening, May 10, was a wonderful event. It is amazing how the Principal, teachers and staff; along with officials from the Durham Board of Education; could have a program of such high quality; presented without a single flaw; in such a short time. A program of excellence; a great accomplishment! Our heartiest congratulations! Sam was deeply moved; and a little humbled; with the great honour and recognition he receiv- ed for his years of service in the teaching field. A memorable evening for him, adding another milestone in his life. The tour of the school was of much interest; and the reception which followed was delightful, with sociability throughout the school; friends pouring tea and coffee; and lovely refreshments to enjoy! All in all - a fantastic evening for the large number of people attending! Open House The Open House, '"'Sam's Day" held at the Nestleton Community Centre on Saturday, May 12, was a warm, friendly time of visiting for Sam; with former students, old friends, relatives, and so forth. The Centre was beautiful- ly decorated; and a Banner - "Congratulations Sam' was in evidence; beautifully done by ar- tist Ken Weir. The talented lady who did the decorating was Chris Davis. The food was out of this world and everyone attending really en- joyed the occasion. Our thanks to - UCW Sec'y Barb Weir and committee. Following this meaningful event; to wind up the week of ac- tivity; a family dinner was en-' joyed at 7 p.m. with-40 relatives and Rev. & Mrs. Dale Davis, and an old friend Marg Cornish, were special guests. This delightful meal was in charge of Dorothy Lee, and the Court Lady Snowbirds. Our sincere thanks to them! Afternoon U.C.W. Meeting The May 8th meeting of the Nestleton U.C.W. afternoon Unit was hosted by Neta Fish in her at- tractive apartment; with 10 members present. Leader Mabel Cawker brought the meeting to order with a cordial welcome, and a mother's day wish. The inspiring worship service was able taken by Neta Fish and Irene McKee. Hymn - "Jesus Call Us' was sung with Gwen Malcolm presiding at the organ. Neta led in prayer. Irene McKee read Scripture Luke 18-23, and the meditation with theme "Making Up Your Mind" was presented by Neta; closing with hymn "Faith of our Mothers' and prayer. Roll Call - a verse from an old reader" was well answered. Minutes approved as read by Barb Weir and Treasurer's state- ment by Neta. During cor- respondence a signed get well card to be sent to David Malcolm in Hospital. During unfinished -- 3 Rn business all members be thinking about ideas for the Sept. general meeting and bring them to the June meeting for the programme. Also the July outing - your ideas would be welcome. 18 calls were reported and many soup labels & used stamps were turned in to Barb Wier. A variety mother's day pro- gramme was most interesting with all members taking part. Neta's contest was won by Jean Williams. Meeting closed with Benediction and the social hour was enjoyed by all; over a very tempting lunch - served by Neta and Jean. Effa Stainton gave the appreciation. Nestleton Presbyterian Church The service honouring Mother's Day was held at 11 a.m. with Rev. Wm. Fairley in charge. Joyce Taylor played the organ. Mr. George Scott welcomed at the door. The responsive Psalm was No. 98, and the Scripture readings were from Exodus 2; and St. Mat- thew 2:21-28. The children's story was on "Mothers Influence" on our lives. The sermon on Mother's Day; we were reminded of the bond between our natural and spiritual families. To deal with the moral and other challenges of the world every family needs to be sustain- ed by the love of Jesus not only in the heart of mother, bnt each one within the family. Next Sunday service at 11 a.m. with Rev. Wm. Fairley conducting. Social Notes Marlene Bannister and friend Roy Fitzgerald of Peterbrough, invited Neta Fish out to Haugen's Barbecue for a Mother's Day treat, which was much enjoyed. On Sunday, visiting with Neta were Jim and Audrey Leishman, William, Michael and friend Vicki from Reaboro, and Calvin & Yvonne and children for a Mother's Day celebration. A fine meal and a great visit enjoyed. Arthur & Carroll Cawker of Sudbury, were Sunday guest with his parents Sam & Mabel ... before returning home. They were down for the School Opening and the party for Sam on Saturday. * Caesarea Community Church On Sunday, May 13th, 11 a.m. the Community Church had an average congregation. The Ser- vice was conducted by Rev. Dr. W.H. Crawford. His theme was "Mother's Day Thoughts," the text based on 2 Timothy 1:5; speaking of a sincere faith in Timothy; this had been inspired by the influence and example of both his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice. Mothers can still wield a great influence for good on their children or grand- children. The lesson was taken from 2 Timothy 1:14. The Sun- shine Club meets Tuesday from 4-5 p.m.. Next Sunday, May 20, 11 a.m. will be the last Sunday for Rev. Dr. Crawford, as he sets off to England and Australia for several months. Our very best wishes to Rev. Dr. W. H. Crawford for a great holiday! We shall miss him!
