Cartwright Central School - : teacher Tom Thompson has " .xbeen ap inted vice principal of ri Queen Auditions next week Theatre presents Glass Menagerie The Borelians Community Theatre has become a force in community theatre, recognized province wide as a group fearless in the face of risk. Innovative, and unique are the words that best describe this special group of ac- tors and directors and technicians. Their first major production of the 1990-91 season will be perhaps the greatest play Tennessee Williams wrote, The Glass Menagerie. This haunting, poetic drama studies the lives of a fami- ly trying to come to grips with reality, only to have that reality come crashing in on them through an outsider's visit. The roles include Amanda, a faded southern belle, clinging to the false hopes and lost dreams of a life gone by, yet devoted to her children. Laura, her daughter is a quiet young women, crippled at an early age, yet crippled by a shyness that places her in a world of her own. Her brother Tom is a disillusioned young poet, who "wants nothing more than to _ escape the life he is living, yet not *. knowing quite where to go. In to their lives, and out of their past comes Jim, a potential gentleman caller for Laura, who brings their dreams to reality. Tennessee Williams wrot often of the south, and more often of southern women. In this play he has perhaps his most perfectly realized creation. Ever the poet, the play represents an early part of Williams' life, before he went on to become on of the greatest _ modern playwrights. First pro- "> duced in the forties, The Glass Menagerie was hailed as a si masterwork of the theatre, pav: ing the way for Arthur Miller's izabeth PSin Oshawa. Directing this great work will be John H. Foote, who selected the play because of its beauty in the use of the language, and to challenge the actors and au- diences of the Borelians. Foote, who has directed four of the last six Borelian plays (Agnes of God, Death of a Salesman, Jitters, and The Passion of Dracula) is a firm believer in looking into the history of theatre and producing the classic modern works. The thirty one year old director has been a driving force for the Borelians and central Ontario theatre. The Glass Menagerie marks the for- tieth play/workshop he has directed, and for those that had the chance to see either Agnes of God or Death of a Salesman, you can be sure this play is in the hands of a fine dramatic director. In perhaps the most innovative move Foote has made, he will~ have two casts for this work, with both getting performance time. What this means, is that rather than limiting himself to four cast members, he will in fact have eight. This gives actors double the AUDITIONS ARE: Sunday, June 24 at 2:00 and Tuesday, June 26 at 7:30 at the Town Hall. For any information call 985-0611.
