4 -- PORT PERRY STAR REAL ESTATE -- Tuesday, June 19, 1990 pice PrN FRA Solar energy in the home (From page 1) the system's capability to use an anti-freeze solution for gathering heat. The anti- freeze is warmed in the col- lector and then circulated to a heat exchanger near the holding tank. The heat is then transferred to the water in the tank. The warm water tank is usually located in the base- ment or buried under the house and must be well in- sulated to prevent heat loss during storage. Compart- ments in the tank can be us- ed to give a variable range in water temperature. Con- trols are required for this type of system. Temperature sensors are installed in the collectors and in the storage tank. When the temperature at the collectors exceeds that of the tank by eight degrees celsius, a pump circulates tank water to the collectors to gain heat. The pump switches off automatically when the water in the tank is the same temperatures as in the collectors. Warm water can be used for heating the rooms in your home as well. In a space heating system, the water is circulated from the storage tank into radiator coils in the rooms. While water is the most common medium for transferring heat into rooms, air can also be used. The air is heated in the same way as the water. It is then carried through air ducts and the heat is stored in a large tank filled with heat absorbing rocks. The air system has some advantages over the water system. Air will not freeze or corrode the ducts and leakages cannot cause any damage. On the other hand, air ducts are bulkier and take up more living space. Also, the air storage tank is larger and actual heat _ transfer is more efficient in a water system. Several solar heating pro- jects incorporating both ac- tive and passive systems are currently operating in Ontario. Most of these have a supplementary system us- ing gas or oil. Although some solar pro- jects have cut fuel costs by 90 per cent, realistic expec- tations are between 50 and 60 per cent with commer- cial systems currently available.
