Canada 123 years old by Ross Stevenson, M.P. Durham When we're not swimming, pic- nicking or just plain relaxing on July 1st, all of us should spare a few minutes to think about why we're celebrating. Of course, it's Canada Day -- our own national day -- a holiday commemorating this country's creation 123 long years ago. We've heard more than enough negative talk about Canada in the past few months. July 1st is a logical time to look at some of the positives. By and large those have been 123 good years for Canadians. The country has grown from a loose collection of former colonies, sparsely spread across some awesome geography, into a nation today in which virtually anyone would be delighted to live. Our standard of living is world class. Despite its periodic ups- and-downs, the economy is healthy. We're sheltered by one of the world's finest social welfare systems. Many of us will spend Canada Day at beaches, parks, remote ~ lakes or summer cottages -- the sort of nature and recreation facilities that we expect and which are envied by those in other lands. Canada is a very good country, and it's been very good to us. So why on earth would we want to even consider breaking it up? Perhaps it's just because we take all that goodness for granted. Earlier generations faced threats and had to fight wars. Often they lived in isolation, hazarding the rigorous extremes of climate. Most came here from other lands in search of a better life for themselves and their children. Many found it. And all the while they were helping build the great Canadian nation that we enjoy today. Unfortunately, along the way we Canadians also inherited a remarkable tendency to keep worrying and picking at ourselves. As someone com- mented during the recent con- stitution discussions: '""We're the only people in the whole world who feel compelled every six months to dig up our roots and look at them, just to make sure we're still there." Co Certainly Canada has problems today. We'll never be without some. But when viewed across the persepctive of time, our wor- ries seem nothing when com- pared to what previous genera- tions of Canadians faced and overcame. ow Canada is as fine a nation as any of us will find on this earth. Let's remember that. And let's be proud, positive Canadians on Ju- ly 1st....and thereafter. AND IN THE MATTER OF the lands and premises known as the "Head Church and Cemetery" located in Part of Lot 22, Conces- sion 6, Scugog Island, in the Township of Scugog in the Province of Ontario. TAKE NOTICE THAT the Council of the Corporation of the Township of Scugog on the 12th day of March, 1990, established its intention to designate the lands and buildings known as the "Head Church and Cemetery" as a property of historical and /or architechural value or interest under the Ontario Heritage Act, R.S.0. 1980, c. 337. STATEMENT OF REASONS FOR THE PROPOSED DESIGNATION: Pioneers of the "Head" Community (the southern third of Scugog Island) received ministerial services from the Methodist Episcopal Minister who held meetings on the Island during the 1840's and 1850's. Following a meeting in the 1850's, there was a decision to form a Church and Sunday School. In 1860, sufficient funds ($677.00) had been collected to build a church proper and a shed for horses and carriages. In 1905, the congregation built a porch and cement walk and the tea room was added in 1914. - Regular services ceased in 1959 and the "Head Church" came under the care of the Scugog Shores Historical Museum in 1969. 'The Head United Church Women's Group and the Museum now preserve the Church. The main features of the Church remain the same today. The church proper, the enclosed porch and the tea room together with the win- dows, ments, floor and pews are original. Other rural churches which have experienced closings have donated their historically ¢ significant treasures for interior use. ' ~. The location and appearance are the same. The ground level building « with simple lines and white clapboard remains a sanctified church. * ANY PERSON MAY within thirty (30) days of the 12th day of June, 1990; serve by registered mail or personally deliver to the Clerk of the Corporation of the Township of Scugog, notice of objection * to the proposed designation, together with a statement of the reasons for the objection and all relevant fact. Dated at the Township of Scugog this 11th day of June, 1990. Earl S. Cuddie, Township of Scugog, 208 North Street, PORT PERRY, Ontario LIL 1A7 (416) 985-7346 -
