PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 10, 1990 -- 17 Local residents celebrate July 1 in London An Enjoyable Celebration On July 1st weekend, Norm & Bernice Mairs of Fleetwood Trailer Park, Janetville, travell- ed to London, to help celebrate Canada Day, and four family members 65th birthdays. Other family members attending were Ted & Anne Mairs of Cannington, Bernice & George Sellers of Coll- ingwood, Joyce & Bud Virtue of Bowmanville, Cousin Freda Maynard of Port Perry and friend. The festivities began Friday night at the huge pavilion at Wonderland Gardens. Ray Sonin, founder of the Big band festival of the "calling all Britons" program of C.F.R.B. was on hand to welcome the large crowd, and recall many fond memories of Guy Lombardo, a native son and his famous Royal Canadians Band. On Sunday, July 1st, Guy Lom- bardo's Royal Canadians enter- tained at Harris Park, to a crowd Myrtle Pie Sale a success The Myrtle Church Pie Sale was once again a big success. The Art Sale, which was an added feature this year, went over quite 'well also. Thanks to everyone for their help and time. Congratulations to Bill and Carol Blea on the arrival of their new daughter Kelly, born June 28, weighing 9 lbs. 5 ounces. A new sister for Daniel, Sean and Robin. On Monday, July 2, the Guy Lombardo band was featured at Wonderland Gardens from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. A sumptuous brunch was serv- ed to the large crowd, and a memorable weekend came to a close. Other bands featured during the big band celebration were: Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, The Little Swing Band, The Am- bassadors and the New Modernaires. Nestleton United Church With a smaller attendance on Sunday, July 8, 11:15 a.m. the friendly greeters were Henry & Effa Stainton. Rev. Dale Davis' message was thoughtful and of interest re - sub- ject "Wrestling With Our Shadow Side." In the choir Kathy Tromans & Jan MacKenzie sang 'Then I Met The Master" with Gwen Malcolm at the organ. Offering rec'd by Richard & Leslie MacKenzie. Ser- vice closed with 'King of Love" by Charles Venn Pilcher 1879 - 1961. Benediction and Three Fold Amen followed. Nestleton Women's Institute The July 4, meeting of Nestleton Women's Institute was held at 1:30 p.m. in the Nestleton Community Centre with Rika Wygerde, president, welcoming the members. The Institute Ode and Collect was followed by an appropriate poem "What Do I Give My Country?" The minutes of the June meeting were read by secretary Neta Fish and treasurer's report given. Replies had been received from Solina and Bowmanville Branches, regarding the invita- tions to Nestleton's Sept. meeting, also a letter requesting informa- tion re - 4-H Club. The usual award to Grade 8 stu- dent, for the most improvement in SPECTACULAR SALE ONE DAY ONLY 'SATURDAY, JULY 14TH 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM writing, had been awarded to Angela Lymburner of Cartwright Central School. Norma Frew was thanked for her donation of a new Canadian Flag for the flag-pole at the Nestleton Centre. The roll call was well answered by members "'A Law I would like enforced" and Branch was pleas- ed to have a new member join. A beautiful poem written by the late Frank Bye was read, and ap- preciation for comfort and sym- pathy extended by W.1. members and friends was extended by Elsie Bye. Gwen Malcolm was in charge of the program, and gave the Motto - '""'Alone we can do little: Together we can do much." Doris Nottingham read from an infor- mation sheet on Citizenship and Legislation sent out by the Honorable Ramon Hnatyshyn, Governor - General of Canada (January 1, 1990 appointment) Gwen read an article "By The Work of Their Hands" from the book "By a Roadside Window" by Dr. Ethel Chapman. The meeting closed with O'Canada and the Institute DOC'S DISCOUNT PET CENTRE 52 WATER STREET - PORT PERRY 985-8065 (Formerly Port Perry Pet Shop) Grace, and a tempting lunch was served by Doris Nottingham, Neta Fish and Winnifred Davison. Grace Bajema graciously thank- ed all those who provided such an interesting meeting. Then the members were off to Port Perry where a tour of the Port Perry Library had been arranged. Chief Librarian Ms. Suzzanne White conducted the tour, ex- plaining the various areas - Children's programs, Reading Club, Catalogue, Files, Computer, + Talking Books, A/V Dept., Large Print, Etc. At the close many questions were capably answered, and Rika Wygerde ex- pressed the thanks of the Institute for the interesting tour of such a well equipped facility, for the use of all ages. The next meeting - Wednesday, August 1, Norma Frew, Con- vener, assemble at the Centre 11 a.m. for a noon luncheon in Bowmanville, and a tour of Bowmanville Museum.
